Default Peter Graves, 83, of 'Mission Impossible' and 'Airplane', Passed Away At Home

    07:58 PM ET

Actor Peter Graves, best known for his starring role on TV's "Mission: Impossible," was found dead Sunday at his home, according to a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Police Department. He was 83.

There is no sign of foul play in the actor's death, officer Karen Rayner said.

Graves portrayed the character Jim Phelps for all but one of the seven years "Mission: Impossible" ran on television, from 1967-1973.
He also appeared as Captain Clarence Oveur in the 1980 movie spoof "Airplane!"

Might want to change the thread title to read that he died or passed away.

In any event, who didn't love Airplane? Sorry that he passed away. He'll be laughing it up somewhere beyond this earth.

I looooooved him in Airplane! "Have you ever been in a cockpit before?" "No" "Have you ever seen a grown man naked?" Classic. RIP.

That sort of humor probably wouldn't fly these days.

I never saw "Airplane" but I do know who Peter Graves is.

I hate to admit it, but I thought he was already dead...

There's a quiz on Sunday mornings on one of Montreal's rare English radio stations called Dead or Alive.

The host names ten people, and the caller has to guess if the person mentioned is dead or alive. If the caller gets seven out of ten answers correct, s/he wins a great prize...usually a dinner for two at a really nice restaurant. Very few people win...

Awwwww, any excuse for an Airplane quote.

"I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue."

    RIP Peter.

Aww, I loved Peter Graves! I remember him first from the revived Mission: Impossible series of the 1980s.

^^ Those Airplane clips make me want to see the whole movie again. I haven't seen it for a couple decades.

Did Peter Graves host that old show on A&E "American Justice" or am I thinking of someone else?

I adore Airplane! I think it might be my favourite comedy of all time. You should listen to the commentary on the DVD, it's almost as funny as the movie. In it, they said that the cockpit line was going to be "Ever been in cockpit before? No. Have you seen a man's cock before?" something like that but they decided to go for something more subtle.

I think this kind of humour still flies. I mean, the things I've seen in Family Guy...

Aaawwww, R.I.P. Mr. Graves. He was hysterically underplaying in Airplane.
He's Gunsmoke's James Arness' younger brother.
