Default George Lopez surprises Jessica Alba with DNA test, makes her feel awkward

December 2, 2009 -- 'Lopez Tonight' keeps bringing in hot celebrities and the Monday night show (December 1) was no exception.Jessica Alba talked about Honor, cooking thanksgiving dinner and made her first tweet. Follow Jessica at twitter.com/JessicaAlba.

Alba experienced her very first tweet on Lopez's stage, taking time to give a shout out to the Tweeter world as well as to 'Lopez Tonight.'
After spending a few more minutes tweeting, the show's focus then turned to Alba's true ethnicity. Bringing family origin to the forefront, Lopez Tonight guests allow DNA results to find out their ethnic background in detail.

What was fascinating was to watch Alba's face. She looked a bit surprised when her background was revealed, an awkward moment for the actress since her parents and grandparents were sitting in the audience. According to the test's results, Jessica is only 13 percent Indigenous American and 87 percent European.

He seems a little weirdly obsessed with Hispanic heritage. Wasn't there some grief on the set of his show because the teen age daughter was played by a girl who wasn't hispanic so she eventually quit?

I've heard him in interviews and I don't think he is particularly obsessed about Hispanic heritage. Also, the Albanian actress who played his daughter was on there for the entire series run (five years).

Right but she was treated horribly by the other cast members for not being "hispanic." When she left the show he hired a Hispanic girl to replace her role. The show was canceled pretty soon after. He had made a comment if I recall that he was happy now that the cast was entirely hispanic. Masiela Lusha was a last minute replacement for the show after the original girl chosen couldn't take the role.

Some people think that JA intentionally downplays her Hispanic heritage. Maybe that's why Lopez thought that would be funny.

Most Latinos (I think) are a blend of indigenous and European blood anyway. I'm not sure who gets to the be the genetic police who decides where someone is Hispanic enough to be considered Hispanic.

Both of my kids are half-Puerto Rican (my husband's side), though he himself is actually Puerto Rican, Spanish, and French. Both my daughters like to think that they are really Latina but the reality is they are not so much.

    Oops, Mommy cheated!

Just kidding, as BBDSP said, most Latinos have European ancestors somewhere along the line.

I don't know. She completed only 17 episodes less than George Lopez himself. The cast list doesn't show another "Carmen" either. She seems to remember the time fondly:

"Throughout the years working on the George Lopez show, Carmen was a liberating escape for me. I was able to experience moments of high school, lessons with boys, and a rebellious streak that I have yet to experience as Masiela. I can safely say I have lived a colorful life, and I have Carmen to thank."

Well the girl who replaced her played a cousin I think, not Carmen herself.

Anyway it's what I heard through the grapevine. He was very unhappy that she wasn't Hispanic.

    +1
I think her mom is Danish/French and her dad is Mexican but Latinos are a mix of Spaniards and Indian Americans. So no wonder she's 87 percent European.
And George Lopez will surprise more guests with DNA tests to find out their ethnic background in detail.

Depends on where the are from. Many Latinos are a mix of African, European, and indigenous blood- just like black Americans, especially in places like Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. When I am in PR or the DR they assume I am from their country because I look exactly like them even though I am a caramel-complected black American.

My grandfather, who was born in the Dominican Republic, is a very dark-skinned black Latino and considers himself black even though he is technically mixed. He certainly identifies as Latino.

As far as Jessica, her heritage doesn't shock me as her- last name is European-maybe Castillian or Italian. I don't really consider her to be Latina. That's JMO. I don't consider myself a "Latina" either- I just say I have some Latin heritage. And I thought she didn
't really identify herself as Latina but as mixed?

As far as her getting criticized for minimizing her latina heritage, I think it is ridiculous to accuse someone of self loathing or shame because they do not define their ethnicity by the minority of their bloodline (minority being the lower percentage). For example, if I am 2/3 white American and 1/3 Mexican, why would I be expected to call myself a Hispanic or risk being accused of being ashamed? Besides, 'Hispanic' isn't a race to begin with and I get so sick of people using the term racism to address issues that involve Hispanics, Muslims, etc. Neither of those is a race and people of any racial background can be either one of those things. Also, it seems that anymore whenever there is a caucasian person who has olive skin and dark hair and eyes people wonder what they're mixed with , as if the default for white people is to be blonde, fair, and blue eyed. Blonde hair and blue eyes are still in the minority, even for white folks. There are plenty of Europeans who are naturally darker in tone and it doesn't mean they are anything other than 'white'. White people come in a variety of ethnicities, too.
