Sofia Vergara makes a bad joke

Sofia Vergara was on The View today and they got to talking about how young she looks for having an 18-year-old son. Sofia joked that she had him when she was 13 after she was raped (in real-life Sofia's son is 17 and she had him when she was 20).

Now, usually when the word "rape" comes up on daytime TV, the lights go down, the studio audience is shuttled out the exit door and Diane Sawyer comes out to ask some "serious" questions. But most The View hens and the audience just laughed away. Well, all of them except for Whoopi Goldberg, who was probably thinking to herself, "But was it RAPE-RAPE?"

Rape is not funny, but let me preface this by saying that Spanish jokes don't translate well into English -- and there are some doozi's out there in the Spanish language.

Well, the big problem there is it was ENGLISH English. I get what you're saying - maybe there is some sort of language barrier, but I think most language understand/know RAPE isn't humorous.

Homegirl was obviously trying to allude to her having a baby @ 13, because she looked "so damn good". So instead of saying something like, "Yea, I procreated when I was 10" - she said "RAPE". Frankly that doesnt do justic to her, her son, or baby's daddy - MUCH LESS the "RAPED" population.

I completely agree with you. She should have not tried to joke around in a language she is not very familier with. This would have been fine in Spanish language tv -- in that the joke wouldn't have be so disturbing to the viewers.

It still jarring to me whenever I hear jokes about majorly serious issues, and I was raised in Latin America and used to the different type of humor. I can just image what this must have sounded like to everyone else...
