Default Morrissey collapses on stage

Singer Morrisey was rushed to the Great Western Hospital tonight after he collapsed on stage just one song into a gig at The Oasis in Swindon.

The 50-year-old former Smiths frontman, wearing a light grey open-ecked short and black trousers, appeared on stage looking drawn.

He said to the 1,000-strong audience: "Good evening... probably," before launching into The Smiths' 1983 hit This Charming Man.

He appeared to be straining to perform the song, wincing as he did so.

Just as he came to the end of the song his knees sagged and he slumped to the stage. Two band members rusged to his siade and dragged off stage, he was immediately followed by his backing band and singers and the stage lights went up, to cat calls and whistles from the audience.

After ten minutes of silence a stage hand came to the microphone at the centre of the stage. "We will keep you informed what's happening."

It was another 25 minutes before another black-clad stange hand came to the same microphone. "Morrisey has left the building," he said.

"Please keep your tickets and you can get a refund or some again if there are more dates."

He was met with boos and more catcalls from some sections of the audience.

"He is seriously ill," the announcer added.

The singer had been taken by ambulance to Great Western Hospital.

A spokesman said doctors have examined the singer and are at present talking to his management team. More details will be released in an hour.

I can't believe some people were booing. The guy was sick - give him a break. I love Morrissey. Suedehead was his best solo song, even though a lot of his solo tunes were rather depressing. Smiths' songs were a bit more cheerful.

I hope he gets better.

It's ironic that he was cancelling left and right before he became sick anyway. Drugs? Alcohol?

From what I understand he has been generally unwell for a while. I hope that he does not have a serious illness that he isn't discussing. Not that I think he should blab about it, only that I hope he is not ill in some way. It makes me sad to think of that star fading.

This not very charming fan: Morrissey storms off stage after bottle thrown by concert-goer hits him in the eye

When it comes to live performances, it seems former Smiths frontman Morrissey just isn't having any luck of late.

The 50-year-old musician stormed off stage last night after being hit in the eye with a bottle while performing in Liverpool.

It comes just three weeks after he was rushed to hospital after collapsing on-stage in Swindon.

Ouch! Morrissey is struck with a bottle during his performance in Liverpool
over the weekend

Morrissey opened last night's concert with the words, 'It's Saturday, it's Liverpool, it's raining, it's perfect', before launching into the Smiths' hit This Charming Man.

He had shown no signs of the respiratory illness which saw him spending the night in hospital on October 24.

But during his second song, Black Cloud, he stepped forwards to the front of the stage to shake the hands of fans when a plastic bottle of beer was hurled at him.

The singer stood up and said 'goodnight' to the stunned 8,000-strong crowd before walking off stage.

His fans then burst into chants of 'Morrissey, Morrissey. Morrissey' in an effort to get the performance back on track.

But about five minutes later, an announcement was made to a chorus of boos that he had been hit on the head and would not be resuming the concert.

Iain Kavanagh, 33, from Liverpool, said: 'Some people were complaining afterwards because he's been in the game for years and he should be used to it by now.

'But he's a 50-year-old man who has just been ill and he deserves better than that.'

Staff at the Echo Arena, where the concert was being held, said Merseyside Police have been informed about the incident.

The venue's general manager, Tim Banfield, added that the fan who threw the bottle ruined a brilliant night out for thousands of music lovers.

'We are exceptionally disappointed that one individual should choose to recklessly cause the concert to be abandoned, ruining what should have been a brilliant night out for thousands of Morrissey fans,' he said.

'The Echo Arena team take great care to ensure the safety of visitors and artists at the venue.
'However it appears that one person was determined last night to throw an object at the stage with the intention of causing as much disruption as possible.'

Mr Banfield said he will now review all food and drink arrangements 'to tackle the small minority who appear incapable of behaving in a responsible manner'.

Concert-goers have been advised to contact their ticket retailer to find out if they will get their money back.
