Tanning does indeed help make you look lean and defined. But some of these people are beyond tan. They are the same color or darker than their *black* counterparts.

I don't understand why these people are okay with they way it makes their face look. Not just manly, but deformed. What causes this? Testosterone I presume, but is it because the exercise makes their body produce more testosterone or is it a clear sign they are using steroids?

Jezi, it's probably from extremely low body fat.

The female bodybuilders in Oxygen mag don't look like that. Those women ^ are mentally ill. The dudes with the implants don't even look human.

Ok, if there's no fat in the face the bonestructure does stand out.

I have skeletor face myself, eventhough I'm not skinny at all.
But my features are still feminine, not as square and sharp and wide as these ladies' faces are. Those jawlines and brow ridges O__O.

Some of these women were beautiful once. Sad.

JuicyLucy, that episode of AD was awesome. All to impress his cousin...

Honestly, this creeps me right out. I know one person who does this stuff, she's probably in her 40's and started out simply trying to get in shape but now does these fitness modelling competitions and trains others for the same. She has a website with before/after pics and I can't believe anyone in their right mind would prefer the "afters". Not to mention it's like her whole life revolves around what she eats/what workouts she does. I mean, I get it, I'm a competitive athlete for god's sakes, but that literally seems to be all she thinks about. I deleted her off of facebook because I couldn't stand the constant updates on what variation of steamed chicken she's eating today. She was entertaining for a time because I could snicker through her photo albums and laugh at some of the girls who looked like they had been dipped in wood varnish, but she quickly began to grate. These people completely lack self awareness.

I used to work with an actress who was the mother of a woman like the ones pictured. She was very worried, but could do nothing but politely voice her objections and hope her daughter would eventually come to her senses. She said it was standard practice for them to *drink* a shot of formaldehyde before the competition so their muscles would stand out more.

Seriously?! Apart from being a carcinogen, isn't formaldehyde kind of... toxic? Christ, you could kill yourself doing that. Dodgy eating and exercise habits are bad, but this seems like pure insanity to me.

From the National Library of Medical Science:

Formaldehyde is listed as a human carcinogen in the Twelfth Report on Carcinogens published by the National Toxicology Program because it causes cancer of the throat, nose, and blood. Drinking large amounts of formaldehyde can cause coma and death due to respiratory failure. Drinking formaldehyde can also cause convulsions, intense pain in the mouth and stomach, nausea, vomiting, signs of shock, vertigo, stupor, and diarrhea. Direct contact of the eyes with formaldehyde can cause permanent eye damage or loss of vision.

Exposure to high levels of formaldehyde can cause a build-up of fluid in the lungs, severe shortness of breath, bronchitis, and rapid heart rate. Continued exposure can also cause severe allergic reactions of the skin and eyes, skin allergies and rashes, and asthma-like allergies with coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, and a drop in body temperature.

Exposure to low levels of formaldehyde can irritate and burn the eyes, nose, throat, and skin. In women, exposure can cause menstrual disorders. People with asthma may be more sensitive to exposure to formaldehyde.
    Who would willingly drink that?!

Well, mind you this was an *actress* telling me this, so she may have been glossing details for effect I've always wanted to ask one of my doctor friends whether or not this was possible but keep forgetting

This one reminds me of the current, fugly, James Bond actor - what's his name? The short, blond guy.
