Naturally I don't think that, but I think of artists/performers/stars
nowadays in terms of the
markets that they're going after.
And when I say market, I don't just mean "Orange County" or
"Cooke County," but what group of people.
The question is: who is going to put down money for your sh!t?
Punk boys? Nerdy video game addicts? Middle-aged guys who
think they're Dennis Farina? They're your market.
After all, if you're a movie star, not every single
type of person is going to see your films. Older folks in their
forties and fifties will not go to a Reese Witherspoon movie;
she appeals to a different market (i.e., a different section
of the population). Those folks in their 40s will go to a Kevin
Costner movie.
If a star like Julio Iglesias does a song with Willie Nelson,
that's because Willie wants Julio's fans to try his music;
and Julio wants various rednecks to buy his albums.
It's an attempt to broaden your appeal. Sometimes it
works; sometimes it doesn't.
So Hillary Duff, IMHO, is testing those weak-minded Motorhead fans
who might be swayed into buying her records,
thinking she's a Motorhead fan.
Just because people here are too shrewd to fall for that
doesn't mean everyone will dismiss her.
