I wonder how these people died. Most of them were babies and children and in a couple of the group photos I found it hard to determine which person was dead.

Doesn't really bother me. I work in law enforcement (I'm not a cop) and have been to an autopsy, so these are nothing.

I find it pretty fascinating too. I have a small collection of pics. There's one in particular with a dead boy in his bed and his little brother next to him. It's so creepy it freaked me the hell out. I didn't know about this practice until I saw The Others.
Just my luck that my 10 year old cousin was looking for funny cat pics in my computer and stumbled onto those pics. She wasn't sure what they were about and I told her that the people weren't dead but she still had her doubts.

Hole put one on the cover of their single 'Violet'. It was a little girl.
I would say that some of the babies in the above photographs were stillbirths. Infant mortality rates were very high then also, typhoid, diptheria, etc.
Here's another site with a collection:

It's a smell you can never forget, that's for sure.
I remember the pathologist opening the chest cavity and jesusfuckinghell.

This doesn't seem strange to me. I've seen snapshots in the family album taken at funerals. Nothing strange to me about wanting one last photo of someone you loved, especially if you had never had any photos taken of them. I think people are less likely to do it these days because we can easily take oodles of pictures of them while they are still alive, but I can relate to what made these people want photos.

That's where I came across it. Now that is a horror movie. Love it just like I like this stuff, for the macabre reasons. And macabre really is the perfect word, isn't it? I can't imagine anyone finding this stuff helpful... Hey we should take ones of ourselves pretending!
