Yeow, that's 80 cigarettes a day. If she slept 8 hours, that's smoking a cigarette every 12 minutes or so. That couldn't have helped the TB.

No kidding! Hard to imagine that gorgeous girl from GWTW smelling like an ashtray!!! In one of her last movies, "The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone" she starred with Warren Beatty. The smoking by then had also lowered her voice considerably.

An older Vivien Leigh (6 years before her death at 54) in the Warren Beatty thread> Warren Beatty [Actor]

It's rumored that Leigh and Beatty had an affair during the making of that movie. Don't know if it was true or not.
If you think she was beautiful in Gone With the Wind, have you seen her in Waterloo Bridge? Incredibly gorgeous and tragic at the same time! I think she deserved an Oscar for that movie, as well. On the stage she could hold her own with Olivier and was just as talented.

No, they didn't have an "affair", but - mostly due to her fragile mental state at that time - Beatty (and the director) spent a lot of time off set with Vivien, kinda to help her through stuff. They had a movie to make and finish, and she was the lead role. They couldn't afford to have their star have a total mental breakdown in the middle of the shoot. Vivien was very open about her attraction to Beatty, even if he was half her age, but most of it was just a reaction to Laurence Olivier having found new love in the much younger Joan Plowright (sp).

well actually for that movie i believe (or it could have been another from that era) they had to try and make her look older b/c she was so beautiful that it was hard to believe that she was this older woman character and even after all their attempts to make her look worse; they couldn't...or so the story goes.

Well, I doubt that was about her at this stage in her life and career. Here's some pix of what she looked like in the sixties. She died in 1967, aged 54. She ranges from 47 to 52 in these pix below.

(She looks amazingly much like Warren Beatty's sis Shirley MacLaine in the right pic! )

Right pic is an obit with a picture from 1962 when she was 49.

Vivien in younger, gorgeous days.

With not too shabby husband Laurence Olivier
