He was an occasional co-smoker while in relationships with (heavy) smokers Joan Collins and Natalie Wood. He puffed cigarettes for his roles as Paulo di Leo in "A Roman Spring for Mrs. Stone" in 1961, in "The Only Game in Town" (with smoker co-star Elizabeth Taylor) in 1969, cigars for "McCabe and Mrs. Miller" in 1970 and as Nicky in "The Fortune" (when it was most obvious that he really wasn't a smoker) in 1975, plus he dubbed smoking a dooby in 1998 "Bulworth".
Barely smoked, never drank. He DID always have a very expressive face. I have noticed that people who barely use their facial muscles while talking (Deborah Harry, Morticia Beaulieu, Greta Garbo) hardly had any wrinkles. Also, I'm wondering if his diabetes has anything to do with the speed of his skin aging.......

Oh, I didn't know he had diabetes. Maybe that's it. Both he and his sister, Shirley aged really fast, I think prematurely..and that's not speaking of people who do plastic surgery. Just in general. They were in their 30's and already looked like they were in their 40's. I wonder if it's genetic? I would assume he colors his hair right? Because it's not totally white which is surprising. But Shirley is especially wrinkled...men can sort of get away with that 'look', but it looks really bad on women (a la Bridgette Bardot--she also wrinkled young). I don't really know much of Warren, never really followed his career, but I always thought Shirley was a nutcase, a real b****. I never liked her.

His hair doesn't look odd to me. Most of my male relatives are (or have) going
grey that way. The temples, a few hairs on top and then gradually like a veil
the grey spreads while their own (dark color) stays. My dad died shortly after
he turned 93 (he had me about the same age Warren started with kids) and
he even still had black patches of hair underneath the white!

As far as the aging went. I know he looked younger than his actual age for
the longest time and it bothered him.
Some of his best friends (including Jack Nicholson) have related how Warren
would envy their receding hairlines and bags under their eyes. They'd of
course call him crazy, but he couldn't wait to get, as he called it, "character"
in his face.
Despite the popular belief that he is "so vain", you'd be surprised how untrue
that actually is. Many of his careers choices have been (and plenty of critics
have hinted at this regularly) as if to excuse himself for the way he looked.
For instance> his debut part of Bud in "Splendor in the Grass" was taylor
made for him, written by William Inge who had a massive crush on him.
The part was too close for comfort to Warren> the handsome, football hero,
popular schoolboy.

So for his next part he wanted the complete opposite. That became the
sleazy gigolo in "Mrs. Stone", followed by another opposite to his character>
the lazy, Berry-Berry in "All Fall Down".
When the media were beginning to refer to him as a sex symbol, he had real
problems with it. He was quoted as saying
"I was in Paris and I opened the door of my hotel room one morning to see
this copy of the Herald Tribune lying on the carpet. And there was this large
picture of me. I looked down and my stomach just turned over.
I realized that things were getting out of hand, and in the future I would
have to try and insulate myself
."
This all at the time of promoting "Splendor" a year after it was shot.
It got to be so bad, that right before going on stage for a press conference
about the movie with girlfriend Natalie Wood, he got physically ill and
vomited behind the curtains before facing the lineup of reporters.
So, before he got the much desired "character" in his face, he tried to avoid
being typecast as the handsome, romantic lead. Another reason for him
turning down many roles that became great hits for other actors.

Looking at photos of his parents, I definitely believe the "early aging" gene
was there, especially on Shirley and Warren's maternal side.
I think Warren aged most around the time he and Julie were hitting the first
bumps in their relationship. They were together between roughly 1966 and 1974.
He already called her his "wife" in public, and had all intentions of marrying
her. But in the end his wish to start a family became one of the major
obstacles and drove them apart. THAT's when all of a sudden the last baby
fat was gone from his face, he overall got thinner and the only place you
could still find the little boy were his eyes - which is where it still is to
this day!

I didn't know he had diabetes. Do you know at what age he developed it?

Where's the skin issue? I don't see anything other than a 69 year old attractive man. I mean, how long can any of us be fresh and youthful looking? He didn't poison himself with drug, drink or smoke, and he's been attractive his entire life.

Oh HWBL, you gave me pause when you mentioned the classic hairstyles. You are so right. The men stuck with what worked.

I didn't say he was ugly. I do think he aged rather fast though. He looked older than he was since his 30's. And I do think he and Shirley were very wrinkled, but she especially. She looked 'old' even when she was young...lol. I think Sean Connery and Robert Wagner looked more youthful for their age for years. But I don't know if either of them have gone under the knife, but if so, good for them. They were men in their 50's and they still looked good. Sean Connery, he's got to be at least 70 and he looks great for his age. Some people just age faster than others...like my father. He was 40 and always looked older. He got grey very young, but he was a drinker and smoker his entire life. Lifestyle and sometimes just plain genetics has a lot to do with how we look. I'm just glad I took after my mother in that regard...she's 56 and everone says she looks at least a decade younger.

Thanks for the clips.

I showed my mom this thread and the Classic Beaus thread. She loved it. We scrolled thru and she kept shaking her head saying Of course, of course.

My mom who looks exactly like Mary Tyler Moore (minus the bad PS) saying Oh, look! An Owen Wilson thread! I like him so much!

Talk about puzzling, but she thinks he's adorable. This is from the woman in the elevator with WB who passed down the WB/Cary Grant gene to me.

Well, you know, my mom always says that even the
fugliest person has SOMETHING attractive about him/her Although
Wilson with his dicknose, his horrible whiney twang voice, his not
terribly impressive physique and other less than stellar qualities, somehow
- I hate to admit it - even to me, is kinda fun, in a harmless, totally non-
sexual way. There are way worse types out there. I think for me he's
tolerable because he seems to have a sense of humor about himself. I'd
say good choice, Owen, with your assetts

Your mom looks like (the pre-PS) Mary Tyler Moore???? Wow, that's great.
I think she might not be as tall, though, given your height? (In her prime,
Mary stood 5'9"). I can't believe how Mary's ruined her looks. What a total shame.
Your mom is soooooo lucky to have stood in an elevator with
Warren, sigh. But then, so are you, having seen him with Diane, too,
double sigh.

Hair seems to be the topic these days. Found this cute link with an assessment of Warren's hairstyles by some celebrity hairstylist>

Quote:

http://www.georgecaroll.com/male%20s...rrenbeatty.htm

Warren Beatty

Some times called the worlds sexist man or Mister Hollywood. Here Warren trades in his long locks for this close cropped full contoured style cut. This clean cut casual style takes advantage of his thick natural wave hair, which when cut short gives his wavy hair a straighter control look. Warren is often compared to many handsome well groomed stars of the past.

If your looking for a stylish look (one that almost styles itself Warren Beatty style cut may be the ticket.

This Style Works for all hair types, especially thin straight hair and thick wavy types like Warren Beatty.

To Get Warren's short contoured style cut _ have your hair cut and shaped to fit the size and shape of the head with a slight bit of fullness through the sides, with close cut mid-length sideburns. It often takes a few adjustments (trims) to get the correct balanced fit.
^This George guy may be a "hairstylist to the stars", apparently he's kind of an illiterate, too, considering the many spelling errors on his OFFICIAL website!

Warren's hairstyles through the years>

^Highschool> the football captain crew cut

^The young movie talent late fifties inspired haircut for the early sixties.
I'll see if I can find the actual quote, but - upon seeing the first publicity
headshots for this new upcoming actor Warren Beatty - several of the
studio execs wrote in a memo that he "has potential" but that they should
look into "what can be done about all that hair"

^Late sixties> a slightly longer, yet neatly controled haircut.

^After all the clean cut hair, Beatty in his prime let things go completely.
After McCabe and Mrs. Miller, he let his natural curls grow out, with
this wild end result.

^After taking some time out for politics (supporting McGovern in 1972)
he trimmed his hair ever so slightly and showed up with a subtly more
controlled haircut in The Parallax View and Shampoo.

^By the eighties Warren realized he'd better adjust the length of his hair
to his aging features (for Reds in 1981 and Ishtar in 1987).

^From the nineties on a slow return to the haircut of the beginning of his
career> his medium length curly hair combed back for Bugsy (1991) and
then shortened for Dick Tracy and the rest of the nineties onward.

^Warren in 2006> a distinguished 68/69 year-old gentleman, with a
receding hairline and the haircut that made him famous now in salt and
pepper. The curls have been reduced to waves, the volume is not what
it used to be, but hey: at least the old bugger's still got a decent head of
hair for a guy his age!

P.S. Attention, Chalet: Dick Tracy is "on his way"..... see your PM

Some more random shots of his hotness from younger and prettier times
until the fairly recent past

^Two of the very young Warren with his 4 year older girlfriend/fiancee Joan Collins.
On the right a pensive 23 year old Warren.

^A gorgeous Warren in 1968 with Maria Callas and solo.

^More gorgeous Warren in the late sixties, with Elizabeth Taylor
(what the hell is she wearing?) and another lovely duet.

^Two more lovely duets from the early '70s.
I really like his wild groovy '70's hair

^Always gorgeous with Julie Christie.

^With Robert Wagner in the early eighties
(I don't know if this was before or after Natalie's passing).
And with good pal Goldie Hawn in 1993.

^More pics with very good pals.
First with Gary Shandling in 1999 and with Jack Nicholson in 2000.
