What is the deal with Naveen Andrews?
Hello there all,
I don't mean to offend anyone or put you off.
However...
What is the deal with Naveen Andrews?
I don't understand why he felt the need to change his Name to "Andrews" and then claim he is a "british-born Indian"? He should know better!
"Naveen" clearly does not go well with "Andrews"? Is he related to Julie Andrews or something? Is he ashamed of his background. I would never change my name for anyone.
He's not the first Indian to do that, but really, he should be proud of his heritage and his family name. Which is now "lost" - pardon my pun - in the Hollywood circus he's wrapped up in.
I, too, am a British Indian (living in the U.S now) and I love my background. I would never change my family name even if I do, indeed, go onto play football (soccer to everyone in the U.S) for a U.S team. Indian spirituality and teachings are so wonderful and I am proud of that.
He should openly embrace it, and change his name back for the love of Christ/God or whatever you may go by =).
I sure have seen him do a lot of cross-over Western/English roles. Usually, highly stereotyped. Which often are not very well-thought out, and sometimes verge on degrading and disrespectful. "Buddah of Surbia" to name but one...
I do see a lot of similarities between the way he was treated in England to that of my own treatment. It's sad really. England has no place for individuals. They "turnover" a lot of talent. Overlooked and overshadowed... Oh well, their loss!! Still, that's no reason to give in.
All-in-all he's good at his job. I know "nothing" of acting. 'tis not my forte. Thus, I can't complain. I really do not mean to "knock" your idol. Just wish people would think a little more about their actions. He should change his name back because there's absolutely nothing to be ashamed off.
Warmest Regards,
GothyCowboy ^v^

Re: Naveen Andrews [Actor]
Great post and welcome GothyCowboy
I wasn't aware that he had changed his name....but I have noticed a trend for a lot of famous people, and regular joes who suddenly become "part" something (usually white). I guess it's the global beauty thing...where white is the standard.

Re: Naveen Andrews [Actor]
Hi there SVZ =). Thankyou my dear!
Glad to be part of a forum.
I completely agree with you. "white" seems to be the way to go if you want to make it big, which is just nonsense. He should just be himself!
Instead of hopping on the band wagon.
I also, noticed, that if you want to be in the spotlight as an "asian" you have to bend over backwards to be obnoxious at times. Why lose your dignity. It's just not worth it .
What's the term for Indians born in the U.S? Often, Indians born in the U.K are called "British Asians".
Most people in the U.S don't equate Indians to be "asian". Which is totatly weird . Usually, they think you refer to people of Korean orgins or Chinese etc.
We need better role Models. Bring back Amitabh Bachan anyday!
Warmest Regards,
GothyCowboy ^v^

Re: Naveen Andrews [Actor]
I think it's probably to do with how people are marketed. I'm sure there's some push from their agencies etc to change their last names etc.
A lot of 'white' actors have done this as well, Tom Cruise, Natalie Portman, Charlie Sheen all changed their more ethnic names to more convential ones. Did you know Natalie Portman was Jewish? I sure as hell didn't
There have been lots of articles about how Asians (from China, etc) have been getting plastic surgery to look more Hapa (mixed ethnicity). It doesn't suprise me really though, look at all the famous Asian actresses, even in Asian magazines they look mixed.

What defines "white"? Because Charlie Sheen is part Latino (I think Mexican on his dad's side, right?). Is everything that "looks" white enough white, or everything that isn't too mixed up with say Oriental/Asian, African or whatever?
In some states having only "1 drop of colored blood" still defines that one IS colored, period. No matter how lily white your skin is. Hmmmm. Food for thought.

Re: Naveen Andrews [Actor]
SVZ I love the artwork you chose for your posts!! =) Who is the artist?
It cetainly caputres a lot of emotion in their expressions. Very cool indeed!
You make excellent points. I had no idead the names you mention had changed their names and they are primarily considered non-ethnic. Ouch, what is the world coming too.
Tom has lost his marbles lately. He's really pushing that Scientology stuff on us . I don't think he has the right to disrespect Doctors who treat suerious depression cases. Considering, he is just an actor with no Docterate degree under his belt. Ah, fame, drives you crazy lol.
B.t.W my first name is Vivek (given to me by my Mum and Dad). It's somewhat unique and obscure. In Hindi, it's supposed to mean "Intelligence"... however, I often find myself strongly doubting that =) lol.
Au Revoir for now,

Just more Anglo looking....it's just an aesthetic look. Like how Beyonce looks more 'white' than Michelle and Kelly. Of course it's just opinion, but I do know for a fact that a lot of Koreans and Chinese etc get surgery to look more mixed, eyes enlarged, jaws filed down, and noses raised.
The artist is William Bougeureau

Re: Naveen Andrews [Actor]
I'll be the third person to add that I think he is pretty grim really, and certainly not attractive. Check out his fingernails in Lost - they are sooooo long and womany - it doesn't matter how attractive a man is, if he has long womany nails, I will automatically find him gross!

Re: Naveen Andrews [Actor]
Lol, good job I keep my finger nails clipped phew!!
So do you guys agree with me that he shouldn't have changed his last name to a Western name?
It just looks plain odd!
Thanks for the artist SVZ. I'll have a look at the rest of his work sometime.
B.T.W are you a moderator on the board? If so, that's very cool!
Time to rest, so long for now.
