Having a hard time talking hubby into the painting brick. "Brick is natural, it's not supposed to be painted..." Anyway, look what I found on Pinterest. I think I may have him sold on this. What do you think?

Brick is NOT natural, those are not stones that were chiseled out of a quarry somewhere!

I'm just goofing around. Have fun with it.

I like the after. It's more updated and isn't as hard on the eyes as the red in the original. Fireplaces don't have to be painted to be beautiful but the red tones can be very, very hard to get just right.

ok, it's been a year, so I thought I would finally update on what we did.

So my brother thought it would be a good idea to cut the brick up the sides and put some sort of shelving in. So, once we did that demo, we discovered the brick wasn't really attached to the wall that well, and we couldn't acutally mount the TV on the brick, so he took off the top par of the brick and left the surround, which hubby was marginally ok with. We ripped out the panelling, re-insulated, because the insulation in there sucked, then drywalled. Hubby ended up being sold on it, beccause my brother wired everything for surround sound before he put the drywall up. My brother built a new mantal shelf to go straight across. In hindsight, it's a little too wide, but at the planning moment, we were going to try to cover the bricks that were holding up the original mantel, but they ended up coming down anyway. Then, he also rebult the front of the hearth. We did new fireplace doors and decor. I really do love it and it changed the room. I then took the rug I bought for the room, and got smaller ones for the kitchen so it all goes together. Still thinking about whitewashing the brick I have left.

In the future, this issue is going to be resolved this way. A certain selection of TV's will be OLED and essentially not need to be rigid at all (OLED tvs do not need to have back lighting because of their pixels are light sources themselves). As a result, the TV set will look like a pole standing to the left of the fireplace. When you want to turn it on, it will unfurl sideways like a large roll of paper - either by pulling a handle or electronically. Another way to think of it is that your projector screen will be your TV set - and you wont' need a projector in the first place.

well in reading back to my previous posts, I also took the laminate floor that we had in the kitchen, straight though, so now it's one big room. And, we were able to get a 60" up there too!

It really drives home how the huge wall o' brick was too much.
