i think i would go with the square retro one.
at first glance i was sure i liked the round one best but after looking at the pictures of your place, i think the square one would make a bigger statement in the living room, whereas the round one looks quite small and might look better on a night table or commode or something.

eta: just saw your post - totally agree the retro one would look better with a different shade, maybe something less square and massive.

The modern one is 28" high, and 13 and 3/4" inches wide. The vintage retro one is at least 33" high (it's very tall) and the shade is about another 1/3 or 1/2 as big. It's a damn big lamp. My concern with it is that it might overwhelm everything.

I don't see any end tables?

I'd take both home. I do like the retro one because it's wood and pulls in the tv cabinet wood. I like warm materials mixed in with cool colors. Love that tv cabinet. Everything is streamlined and low so be careful with table lamp heights.

Whatever is behind the retro lamp resembles your sofa pillows. Maybe that's an omen!

The scale of the pictures over the tv are bothering me. I'm so glad you have the Saarinen table, I knew you wanted one.

The sidetables aren't mine, and they're ridiculously gross things that belong to my roommate and are below consideration. When I move into my own place I'll have something different.

The things over the tv are actually bigger than it looks in that shot. That tv bench is 7 feet long, and that tv is a 42 incher lol

You heard it here. Grimm said it's 42" inches.

    That's 106.7 cm.

Ok, so both lamps are great but not perfectly fitting. Keep looking or get both.

It's too big, and I really want a round shade. I'm probably going with the modern one

I think a funky swag lamp hung low near the side of the couch would look great - something like this:

and I love this, but not for your space:

    ^ HAh! LOL

I actually hadn't considered the swag lamp.. maybe for my next place. I'll be moving out of my blighted building by next year and into my own pad.

I've found some good candidates for you that go perfectly with your bingo-biddy hat.

This one even has the round shade you wanted.

OMG, I actually knew someone who had these in their house when i was a kid.
