What overall look are you going for exactly?

Black looks too good inside the fireplace. DON'T MESS WITH THAT PART. The rest, yes.
One friend (gay and talented) took a flat canvas-large one-glued crumpled tissue paper to it horizonally & spray painted it all silver. It looked like it came out of an art gallery. I swear! Very few bucks-big reward.

lol...i guess like an artists studio?

painting it won't help, the woodwork is tacky in itself

Blech, rip it off then. Nobody likes a tacky mantel. Without it, the wall would look very clean.

You might also want to think about wall stickers..

There's a store just off queen west that sells em.. MODA, maybe. There are so many funky stores in that area, hard to keep track.

i think it would look nice painted white.
i'm not too sure about the flowers, but mostly because i can't quite picture what it is you mean exactly. maybe i'll like the end result.

ok. i think that could work. would be hard to dust though. maybe some tougher flowers so cleaning them won't be an issue?

The sofa is neat looking from a design standpoint.. but there's no back to it. It looks really uncomfortable, and probably is. One of the problems with hot modern furniture: not comfy.
