I wonder how their teenage daughters feel about living there? I'm depressed just looking at it.

    No air conditioning? NFW.

The no air conditioning and the isolation is a no-go for me. But I do love the views and think the scenery is gorgeous.

    FUCK THAT SHIT.

Even though 94 degrees in dry heat probably doesn't suck as bad as 94 degrees where I live. But still....FUCK THAT SHIT.

It looks like a Portacabin construction site office. If you don't want aircon that's OK, but at least get some shutters to keep the heat/light out during the summer.

the house is pretty basic (architecture and interior wise) but i really like those people. them and their stories: saying hello at the bordello, the 'zabriskie point' mention (the car/plane scenes!), marking her husband and burying her wedding ring, playing johnny cash and bob dylan for their guests, their love for travelling and deserts, e-mailing the architect and the shared sensibility comment, the gold digging contractor, the self-mocking attitude of her husband, not wanting a too civilized desert, being able to see the stars up close in winter, etc.

and maybe i misunderstood some of you but i don't think they plan on living there full-time. it's a second home. a holiday home. my parents own a house in a desolate area as well. there's no central heating (despite a relatively harsh winter), no internet, etc. it's not a place to permantly live at, but a place to escape to once in a while. and i think - reading in between the lines - that's what these people wanted as well.
btw, the view from their house is terrific.

I just got back from Nevada last week and a group of us drove to the Grand Canyon. We were all wondering how people end up in the middle of the desert, no real greenery and scalding hot. I guess this is a reason why.
Beautiful sunrises and sunsets I bet though.

I'd be scared of the isolation out there in case any whackjob happens through. It seems like the beginning of a horror film to me, quite the opposite of "safe." But I always think of things like that when I see houses built in complete isolation.
