Default Kitchen makeover: cramped and dated to open and modern

This designer/contractor-owned home, which was featured in This Old House, was blemished with a small, dated kitchen that was closed off except for a doorway and a counter window. It also lacked good counter space. The owners decided to knock down the dividing wall, update the amenities with simple, streamlined selections, and infuse the space with bright color. The resulting space is open, vibrant, and modern and a far cry from its icky roots.

My old kitchen was not dissimilar from this one, but the remodel couldn't be more different. I hate the combo of the wood grain and the lime green paint on the cabinets. It looks like bad 70's design.

    ^ Yeah, I agree.

The green cabinets look out of place.... I don't care for them...

I LOVE the green cabinets. It looks very retro, but cool and soothing.

I like the green/blue too. My problem is with the cheapo timber laminate-look cupboard doors and the black stone benchtops/splashbacks.

I like it. I'm enjoying the current crop of kitchen remodels that mix various textures and colors.

I'm undecided about the countertops, esp because I can't tell for sure what material it is.

That's what I hate about the base cabinets, too.

I like the openness, but the colors have to go!

Exactly. The avocado green and panelling on the cupboards make it look dated when it is supposed to look modern.

I really like it! I don't think it is something that I would design but it looks like a fun place to have a snack.
