Default An Aspen cabin goes for the old

When Aspen, CO, residents Cynthia and Frank Goldsmith decided their dream home should look like a 110-year-old Colorado homestead, they went to work, hiring an architect to recreate that iconic look. At the same time, the couple traveled to flea markets, antique stores, and salvage yards to find turn-of-the-century hardware, lighting, beams, doorknobs, and even hinges! The only items in this home that are new are the appliances, plumbing, and windows.

The kitchen's substantial island was built from reclaimed wood.

This antique brass bucket now functions as a vegetable washing sink.

normally, i'd say this is SO far from my style that i wouldn't like it at all. but, there is something about it that i do like...the kitchen is pretty cool & so is that patio. of course the location is incredibly beautiful.

I like it too - very warm and atmospheric. I love the dining table/chairs. I bet it cost a LOT of money to get this look.

I like it too, but it is so pretentious and tacky to "recreate" a 110 year old homestead. It would be more authentic if it were, well, authentic.

I think it would be tacky only if it the results were inherently tacky. It appears that they carried it off pretty well.

A great deal of architecture as a discipline has always been about re-creating past styles, revisioning classical buildings, castles, villas, and so on.

If this is an established architectural style in the house's area, then it makes sense that the owners might want to do this. And speaking as someone who has lived in a 130-year-old house, if I had to do it again I might prefer to have the style of an older house with the comfort and convenience of a newer structure.

I don't think I would ever choose to build a house like this, but it could be worse. Much worse.

Yeah, it looks a little too rustic for me. I could stay maybe one night and that would enough for me.

^^ If this house comes with forest animals who do the housework for you, I'm suddenly all over it.

Definitely trying too hard. The only thing I like is the island in the kitchen and I absolutely LOVE that. That thing's as big as my bed!

Splendid. I can feel the warmth from the fire and the book in my hand just looking at the pictures.

see, that warmth feels forced to me. It just looks like someone went "ooh lets go get the most mismatched and RUSTIC looking pieces we can find in an antique shop for the express purpose of making it look antiquey!"

it has yuppie loser written all over it.
