Kanye West has revealed the inspiration behind his controversial beige clothing line - his $4.5m New York city apartment designed by celebrated architect Claudio Silvestrin.

The rapper shocked the fashion world when he revealed his second Yeezy collection in September featuring skin-tight vests and leggings and shapeless sweaters in a range of natural inspired neutral tones from pale nudes, through to army green, brown and then black.

While the fashion world couldn't seem to make up their minds about the post-apocalyptic Fall line, the inspiration for his monochrome palettes and simplistic designs, could not be clearer.

Kanye West has revealed the inspiration behind his controversial beige clothing line came from his own New York city apartment (pictured)

The rapper rocked the fashion world when he revealed his second Yeezy collection in September featuring skin-tight vests and leggings and shapeless sweaters in a range of natural inspired neutral tones from pale nudes, through to army green, brown and then black

His 200 square meter Manhattan loft, designed by his favorite architect Silvestrin in 2007 and decked out in French limestone and pear wood, is the epitome of high end luxury meets natural minimalism.

He made moves to sell the SoHo apartment in 2013, but ultimately pulled it from the market - and its influence has carried over into his unique fashion designs.

Kanye explained that he had been trying to recreate the 'importance of color' in his apartment's 'Zen, monochrome palettes' when he came to design his fashion line.

'Iíve stayed in a Claudio Silvestrin apartment since I was 26, and I love those types of palettes and thatís my opinion,' he said in a Vanity Fair interview.

'And I have this opportunity to work with amazing professionals to get this painting across. I want it to become more of a moving painting than a political statement or a fashion statement. This is strictly . . . not strictly, you can take it how you want; obviously Iím a very socially charged human being. But at the end of the day, Iím just simply an artist trying to express myself, trying to finish my sentences just like my daughter can.'

The high-end home on Houston Street is decked out in natural materials, mostly beige, and is dominated by two monolithic stone structures, which function as a kitchen/bar unit, and a basin and bathtub unit.

Though Kim, Kanye and their daughter North West are often spotted leaving the abode, it is not clear which of the rigid structures would act as a crib or a play pen for the two-year-old.

Other members of the Kardashian clan and their entourage, including Kendall Jenner and her friend Hailey Baldwin, are also known to stay at the apartment when they are in the city.

According to a New York Post article last year, Kanye is still considering letting go of his fourth-floor bachelor pad, where neighboring rents average around $11,000-a-month.

While the fashion world couldn't seem to make up their minds about the post-apocalyptic Fall line, the inspiration for his monochrome palettes and simplistic designs, could not be clearer

The Fall clothing collection's skimpy outfits used simple lines in muted natural colors, both on the catwalk and sported by Kanye's wife Kim Kardashian

Kanye's 200 square meter Manhattan loft was designed by his favorite architect, Claudio Silvestrin, back in 2007. Despite making moves to sell the apartment on Houston Street in 2013, reports claim he pulled it from the market. He is often seen there with Kim and daughter North

Much like Yeezy I, which was made in collaboration with Adidas, the home features a surprisingly sparse and simple design, in a neutral, natural color palate

Instagram pictures posted of the fashion line reveal the nude colors and multiple layers which were mocked by some as being reminiscent of the Hunger Games films

Much like Yeezy I, which was made in collaboration with Adidas, the home features a surprisingly sparse and simple design, in a neutral, natural color palate.

His second clothing collection in September featured nude body suits, leggings and layers upon layers of utility separates in colors that best matched their skin tones.

At the start of the show, models were called out by drill sergeants; light-skinned, blonde models marched down the runway first wearing equally pale ensembles. Each group that followed had darker skin and clothing than the one before it, creating a subtle ombre effect.

When Vogue asked the designer about his casting choices, Kanye explained: 'Itís just a painting, just using clothing as a canvas of proportion and color.'

The slightly unflattering skin-tight ensembles sparked ferocious debate between fashion fans, with many voicing their thoughts on the less-than-demure designs online throughout the short catwalk.

'Looks like Yeezy designed the costumes for the next season of The Walking Dead,' Twitter user J. Marquez posted, with many others chiming in to voice their agreement. Another show attendee, using the Twitter handle Who Is Mike, recapped the show in one tweet: 'Kanye West out here dressing models like they're from district 12 in the Hunger Games.'

While 57-year-old rapper Ice-T, who described the collection on Twitter as looking 'like future Slave gear.'

Yet, Kanye had plenty of fans too and his second Yeezy collection attracted one of the most star-studded front rows at the September Fashion Week including Vogue's Anna Wintour, Drake, and Lorde, as well as Kanye's wife Kim Kardashian.

Leisurewear brand Adidas Originals sending West a public message of support, tweeting: 'Today adidas long-term partner Kanye West presented a collection as a designer in his own right. Congratulations, Mr. West! [sic]'

During the show Kim and her daughter North West wore colors to complement their skin tones, while Kanye opted for a charcoal-colored sweatshirt.

Like last season's Yeezy I, today's show also featured a performance by artist Vanessa Beecroft. And like Yeezy I, the rapper-turned-designer also released a new song during Yeezy II, titled 'I feel it'.

When asked why he chose skintight bodysuits and baggy sweatshirts to express his fashion vision, Kanye said that he had wanted to make the 'most beautiful version' of the kind of clothes people wanted to wear.

I don't get it. It's not a living space. There appears to be no kitchen, no electrical outlets.

With regard to the clothes, I'm thinking Kanye enjoyed Flashdance even more than I did.

That is the saddest combo of apartment and "clothing collection" I've ever seen. Too much money and way too little sense.

I am obviously confused. I have always thought fashion was all about creating clothes which make the person wearing them look as beautiful/handsome as possible. Boy, was I wrong.

Kanye's clothing line is both beautiful and reasonably priced. You just don't know fashion.

Shit! I had no idea someone would pay that much for ugly. And his loft is as ugly as his clothes. Twitchy, I guess I am just a heathen.

Can't post to FB at work, but there was a hilarious post there about Kimye. The caption reads, "Kim Kardashian got her anus bleached." and next to her is a photoshopped pic of Kanye - someone had made his face look bleached!!!
