Default Contemporary Single Family Residence in Maryland

Contemporary Single Family Residence by Ziger/Snead Architects

This 6,000 sf contemporary single family residence designed in 2008 by Ziger/Snead Architects is located in Pikesville, Maryland, USA. The house, nestled into the hillside to minimize the scale of its 6200 square feet, affords direct and unobstructed access and views to the landscaped rear yard, gardens, and wooded ravine beyond the edge of the property. The simply articulated main body of the house is wrapped in a zinc rain-screen system and captures the kitchen, dining and living rooms in a single, monumental 18-foot high space. Smaller spaces, including the entry, a guest bedroom/office, and the master bedroom suite are discreet cedar-sided boxes that plug into the zinc-clad bar. A custom mahogany window wall system blurs interior and exterior spaces extending the great room to the terraces, gardens, and swimming pool. High-performance glazing with ceramic frit and large overhangs mitigate solar heat gain in the summer months. Radiant concrete and tile floors and the low-angle sun keep the interior spaces light-filled and comfortable throughout the winter.

I like the pretty candy colours (don't hate!).

To me, it looks a lot like a hotel lobby from the outside. Not very houselike.

Pikesville is one of the Jewish enclaves in Maryland. I just double checked and about 25% of the population in Pikesville is Jewish. Real estate in Baltimore County tends to be pretty affordable in general.

Except for the sickly purple bedroom, I love this. Not sure why I don't like the bedroom - maybe the wall art - but it just doesn't do anything for me. Not sure about the candy coated library either, but it looks cozy.

I like some elements of this and dislike others. It looks like an office building from the outside.

University campus building. The only room with a shred of warmth is the basement library.

it does look like a hotel lobby or university cafeteria/library. the living room (with the book shelves) is nice, though.
