Default In Turkey, a Sprawling Home In a Series of Caves

Jan McGready for The New York Times
Laura Prusoff met fellow photographer Nurettin Mantar on her first trip to Turkey in 1995. Their sprawling home is a series of caves carved from the hillside of buff-colored volcanic rock in Ortahisar, where Mr. Mantar was born.

Jan McGready for The New York Times
The five-level home combines nine pieces of property that cost between $350 and $14,000 each. Many “were absolute ruins,” Ms. Prusoff said.

The whole thing is horrible. It makes me a bit claustrophobic looking at it.

The bedroom looks like the ceiling is about to crumble in and I bet it smells damp.

I can't help it. I really like it. Nothing I'd ever live in, but it's got a strange appeal for me.

Hell no, caves scare the crap out of me, I wouldn't want to live in/partially live in/live near one.
