Default Rachel Ashwell's 'Shabby Shack' in Malibu

For Rachel Ashwell, founder of the Shabby Chic empire, a new home on the Malibu coast serves as a reminder that perhaps the tide is turning. In the last two years, she closed 15 stores, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, lost her beloved mum (her muse) and said goodbye to her house in the tony Malibu Colony. But now the maven of comfort style is back, this time living in a rental that she affectionately calls her "Shabby Shack," a symbol of her refocused life and work.

Nice space, but shabby chic tries too hard.

Hate shabby chic and this is no exception. Way overboard. Get rid of all the crap and this is an awesome beach house.

Meryl doesn't even try anymore. She just calls Lanvin and asks for curtains with a belt.~Bitter

I used to love shabby chic. And then I grew up.

This could be so fresh and beachy...

Like everyone else I'm not liking the shabbiness crap. It looks cluttered, mis-matched and messy....but I guess that's the point.

    But that view!!!

Hmmmm. See, I love Victorian furniture and decor, and that can sort of lead one dangerously deep into shabby chic territory. I admit, it happened for a few minutes. I then came to dislike that trend, because it just went wayyyy overboard (though I still love the really dark, grim Victoriana lol..)

Anyway, see, I thought Ashwell's house would be horrifically overdone. I was prepared to gag and jeer and point. But it's not bad at all. Especially for this decorative school of thought, it's quite sparse and it actually looks comfortable, not formal and fussy and cluttered.

I think it's been a while since any of you guys have experienced the true horror of wall-to-wall saturated shabby chic lunacy. Hit Ebay and use 'shabby chic' as keywords if you really wanna lose your lunch. Or worse, peruse a back issue of that godawful magazine, "Victoriana" I think it was called? Urp.

Her house is decorated like a dorm room.

I'm surprised that she has done so poorly though. There were a lot of people out there who absolutely loved that style. Didn't she have a line of bedding at Target?

Yes. I still gravitate toward it sometimes - like when decorating my Sims houses, lol - but I always get tired of it and end up paring down to something more clean and minimal. It's pretty, but just too stuffy.
