Default Need help finding a CORRECT answer to a housing question

I am trying to find out what the average house size(in square footage) is for the existing housing stock in the United States.

You would think this would be easy to find, but I keep getting incorrect info that is presented as the answer to this question.

I want recent info(at least from 2000 or later) on the average square footage of ALL existing homes in the United States.

All I can get is older data, or the square footage of NEW homes built in a certain year. This is often misinterpreted and presented as the 'average' for all housing. I want the average for all existing housing, not just the average for new housing.

I have a feeling it is just shy of 2000 square feet .

I know that it is approaching 2500 square feet for new housing.

The other data I can pull up online is for say, 1980, 1970, etc.

Anyway I word it when I search I cannot seem to get the right answers.

    Thanks for any help.

    * if you can link to the source of your info it would be appreciated.

Not sure who would actually compile that info Soj. Have you asked any real estate agents? Maybe a mortgage company would have those stats?

For 2007. The median appears to be 1769 for all units (bottom of left column).

Courtesy of the Census Bureau. The irony!

Thank you! That does appear to be the info I was looking for. I was figuring about 1,800 to 1,900 or so. And 2007 is quite recent too-about as recent as you can get.

    Thanks for finding it.

Now do you feel guilty for snapping at the census guy?

No. The bitch came back when I was asleep(as in earplugs in trying to get some sleep cause I am working every damn night nearly twelve hours) and I do not hear her, or even know about it, until neighbors call me later after I have woken up, and tell me that she was harrassing them for info about me. So naturally they all were mean to her too! We does watch out fer our own round these trailer park parts I guesses!

Should have 'Lectered' the bitch when I had the chance.

She finally wised up and left a paper with a number to call.

I will call them up and tell them(when it is convenient for me, not when I am trying to sleep) that I sent it in, and I can give them the info over the phone or they can mail me a new damn form.
