Paddington is actually a trendy part of Sydney so prices are high. It's also and end-terrace next to a park which adds $$$. This style of victorian house with the wrought iron balcony "lacework" is fairly common and the way people knock down interior walls to open up the space is also pretty standard. Thankfully we have strict planning/heritage laws which stop people mucking around with the original exteriors which maintains the character of the streets.
