Default How small is too small? One family's creative solution to growing their space

( Christina House / For The Times ) By Lisa Boone

Scott and Sharonne Trattner wanted more space -- more space than a run-down, 900-square-foot Venice cottage could offer. The solution: Behind their 1920 home now sits a new modern, minimalist white box designed by architect Talbot McLanahan.

Together, the two wings of the house -- old and new now form a 1,600-square-foot family home bursting with color and contemporary style. Take a peek inside and see how the Trattners and McLanahan opened up the old house and linked it to its modern addition, which includes a new master suite, children's bedroom and cozy deck.

are people incapable of decorating coherently anymore?

p.s. those dining room chairs? my friends tacky parents had them from the early 80's. It's not cool.

Maybe the house would make more sense if I were inside it? I can't tell which part is new, which part is old, or get a sense of the layout.

I happen to like the dining room chairs--I consider Breuer a classic style. But overall I don't love this place.

The "new addition" looks like a large storage unit on stilts... maybe I just don't dig modern architecture enough but it looks ugly to me from the outside. The inside is ok... the decor seems kind of jumbled, though.

    I love, love, love this.
But they have to remove that purple couch. White one or none would work.
Some of the knickknack might be questionable, but doesn't ruin it.

At least they were fearless! Seems to work very well for them.
