Allison Brown, a horticulturist who grew up in Pennsylvania but now lives in Laos, rents, renovates and then sublets traditional Lao homes. This house, at 110 Vat Chan Street in the captial, Vientiane, was built about 1915. It was her first renovation project in the country.

Ms. Brown's renovationincluded the installation of air conditioning, but also retained traditionalelements, like this small spirit shrine in the garden.
