    Default Building around the rock

Since he was a boy, John Carson, a New York City builder and real estate developer, dreamed of building a house around a giant stone. He and his wife, Sharon Slowik, estimate that they looked at 75 properties before finding this one in Margaretville, N.Y. At left, the boulder in its pre-construction surroundings.

The 250-ton bluestone boulder, measuring 8 feet high, 15 feet wide, 22 feet deep, dominates the living space in the two-level glass-and-copper house that the couple built around it.

I don't like it. It's like dropping a giant boulder in the middle of your living room.

Neat house, but kind of a shame that they cleared that beautiful green space surrounding the boulder in order to build it.

there are still a ton of trees around the house. i think if they'd taken the after photos at the same time of the year as the before, it would still look pretty lush.

I like it. We have some houses build on and around rocks in my area, and it works.

This is the way to build modern. I like it. It is in some kind of harmony with the surroundings, but some more natural landscaping/planting could help integrate it more.

I also think they should have arranged to have some living green plants on the boulder, because it looked so much like a part of the living landscape, and it is a bit stark and barren and sterile in the house with NO greenery or anything 'organic' looking around it.
Don't slap me, cause I'm not in the mood!
