    Default A Koreatown apartment

( Lawrence K. Ho / Los Angeles Times ) By Alison SIngh Gee

Seventeen years ago, New Yorker Peter Gargagliano found his Los Angeles dream: in an apartment in a cool, 1930s Streamline Moderne building in Koreatown. It was small — about 1,000-square feet — but it came with a terrace that had sweeping views all the way to downtown. Gargagliano, then a production assistant making $260 a week, knew two essential things about his new home: He loved it, and it was rent-controlled.

Flash forward. Gargagliano, a successful production designer, was sharing the apartment with his girlfriend, illustrator Masha D’yans. Though they needed more space and could afford to move into a larger apartment, they chose not to leave. Instead, they have turned the expansive terrace into a series of outdoor living spaces.

Beneath all that crapulence there's a really cool Art Deco apartment. The curved bay window is gorgeous. Burn the rest, especially the elegant log dining set and the Creepy Guy too.

Yep, I think it's a piano in the orange kitchen. Never know when you'll be wanting to play a little ditty in the middle of making some pasta.

i'm in love with the kitchen cabinets. and they have some great furniture pieces. i'd toss out the sofas & rearrange the terrace furniture a bit but other than that, this is a pretty cool place. and i love pasta & music so i think i'm going to stay for dinner.

The space is great, but the best part is the outdoor garden area/patio.

The indoor decor is a bit funky.

it's a bit cluttered but overall i like it. they just need a bit of editing.

Why do people tie knots in their curtains like that?

This is by far the best home i've seen. the knickknacks in the one room is a bit cluttered and i'm not overly fond of all the artwork but the overall impression and furniture looks very comfortable and homey. love the area carpets.

I don't mind it, would be a fun place to have a party! (if you weren't worried about everything being destroyed)

    Feels like a swamp.

All they're missing are some 20 foot crocs.
