    Default Cave sleepers

The Sleepers — Curtis, Deborah and their children, Kian, Perry and baby Theodore Wesley — live in a cave, a 17,000-square-foot gouge in the earth left by a 1930s sandstone mine. It’s Tom Sawyer country here in Festus, Mo., just a few miles from the Mississippi River, and the Sleepers showed their adventurous side by making their home 45 feet under a forest (and a neighbor’s home).

I actually figured it would stay a little on the cool side.

    My second thought.

I think it's neat, but I would not want to live there.

I love everything about this place. And just think about the savings on heating and cooling. I wish it were mine.

Happy trails to you...until we meet again.

My first thought was about the critters they're brushing off their faces at night too. It's a little too "au naturel" for me.

uhm, i think it would be really difficult to heat and cool this house, mainly because of the humidity issue. i saw an almost hermetic house a couple of weeks ago and they had to have an air ventilation system installed to avoid these type of problems.

this house, however, is surrounded on 3 sides by sandstone (porous material). a good air ventilation system wouldn't suffice, they would need a powerful dehumidifier. maybe custom built? ... it seems like such a waste of energy.

also, there's far too many small windows. lots of daylight, which is a positive thing, but it leads to more heat loss. don't think they can afford that.

all in all, it's a cool idea... but only in theory. and i would love to see their electricity bill at the end of the month.

Not for me, thanks. I'd feel too closed in, not to mention that most of civilized society has moved on from living inside caves.
