No it's fine when you're awake, really - I've had it twice, I was terrified the first one, to the point I thought till the last minute that I would run away from the operation table, but it went really well -

I was cool the second time but this time they didn't put the tube down well and didn't listen to me when I was trying to gesture to have it pulled back when I was gagging...they couldn't think it was their fault of course but mine for not being sufficiently relaxed - anyway even when it's bad you survive it
