I'm sure that bigger people (I'm not going to say fat... it makes me feel cruel) can be perfectly happy with themselves and prefer themselves that way. The way I see it, someone saying "OMG no way can heavy girls actually like looking like that!" would be like some clueless moron saying to me "Come on - deep down you don't really like being pale and if you could, you would tan!" No. I do like being pale, and I'm sure plenty of people like being bigger, even if some people have difficulty believing either concept could actually be true.
Of course, I do think it's best to be within a healthy kind of weight (ie, control the midsection measurements that can cause health problems, and keep fit) - not because of some whinge about me "paying" for their health problems, but just for their own wellbeing and the wellbeing of their loved ones who don't want to see them ill. However, that doesn't require someone to be skinny or even slim. Some people are just never going to be a US size 8 and that's what's normal for them. So long as they're physically and mentally healthy then good for them. That's what's important.
Life's too short to waste it giving a crap about superficial aesthetics, considering it's all so bloody subjective anyway.

The thing is, you can be over the ideal weight and still have a decent health profile.
Only when you have higher blood pressure, cholesterol level, blood sugar, or joint pain (that is related to the excess weight), should you feel medically compelled to drop the weight.
I am very lean. But I was shocked a couple years ago to find that my cholesterol had gone up 20 points since my last visit. And my HDL/LDL levels were bad. My doctor said to do something about it before he put me on statins. So, even thin me had to give up potato chips, eat more oatmeal, and run 2 to 3 times a week in the wintertime.

I can't say that I prefer to be this size, however, accepting oneself as holistic is a good thing.

Joint pain - also happens due to aging & arthritus (I'm assuming you're meaning attributed only to weight?)
You should see my mother. She's been a US 14 (or more) all her adult life. Seriously, she has the build of a russian shotputter; my Aunt is the same, only lost weight when she was preggers. Both are very fit, my mother swims 1/4-1/2 mile every other day, she's like a boa constrictor & you have to be careful if she's going to hug you.... however.... she is NOT slim or thin by any means, but she's fit. She has problems with her pacemaker as its not made for people as active as she is...
I'm currently the same size, and (pre-op) i was doing 30-40 mins on a stepper everyday/alternate days - didn't drop much weight mind & had to up the settings just to break into a sweat.... and yet my BMI was 34-35.... 1 Dr actually made me stand on the scales as he thought that the nurse had made a mistake.... In hospital when checking my vitals the nurse always said "yep that's fine" when doing pulse, etc... I pointed out that it was raised from "normal" & she said that it was now more than normal & than my "normal" (110/70) is low for most people.... and yeah, I'm still a US 14....

Yup, I'm talking about joint pain in a young person who doesn't have any family history of arthritis. Typically, knees and ankles, and lower back.

Hell, I was very slender at school (a size 6 & considering that I was 5'8"...) and had terrible knee problems....

I want people to be happy & happy with themselves. I think everyone else should stay out of their biddness!

Yeah, not all knees are created equally. My wife and I have both have had knee problems. Although it was probably due to overexercise (or improper exercise) rather than weight.
Johns Hopkins, though has a study ( Role of Body Weight in Osteoarthritis) that indicates that obese women have four times the risk of osteoarthritis in the knee than non-obese women. For men, the risk is five times higher. They also say that being only 10 pounds overweight increases the force on the knee by 30-60 pounds with each step.

Off topic/Novice - you made me think of Great Grandma Dora - from the Old World - built like a shot putter, hugs like a boa constrictor! Omg - when she hugged and when she squeezed your hand! With love! Oy! She had a tried and true grip - two fingers on either side of a bent elbow. You weren't going anywhere...
I have to bump her pic up somewhere in the random section.

I'm glad tictac is gone. When I first joined GR, she and I exchanged some words over this very subject. She was making fun of a 3 year old child, saying she had "cankles" and going on about the toddler's weight, even though the little girl was average sized. IIRC, it was a news story about a toddler that walked out of her pre school and got lost or something. Have fun with your bulimia, bitch. Sayonara!

I know what you mean, my BiL always had UK18 size GFs and now married to one of them. He always looked through me (I'm UK8-10) but I could see in his eyes that I was more within the "good look" boundaries when I was a hyppo (I didn't deny anything from myself during my almost back to back pregnancies LOL)
