We can even get them at every supermarket or drugstore here. The pharmacists give them. No doctor or clinic needed ,so no excuse. 10-20 bucks. Pneumovax is 25.

I get my flu shot at Costco. My old company used to offer them for free, now I pay $20 for the shot. I had the flu once a few years ago and it was miserable. The biggest problem I have is that people come to work with all sorts of nasty shit.

this flu kinda scares me. they always seem to explain the deaths away like they are reassuring people with 'so and so had significant underlying medical disorders'. like oh you dont have to worry if you are healthy. well what if you have a medical disorder that is high on the list of people dying. sucks. totally.

True-but getting run over with an 18-wheeler would hurt less and end quickly! This is no way to go.

The media has made sure that the dreaded Swine Flu is x10000 worse and more deadly that Ordinary Flu. It's not. ALL flus have the potential to kill and they do (approx 500,000 people) year in, year out.
The only time I had a flu shot was 5 years ago and what do you know, I got the flu. And yes, you do feel like shit for a couple of weeks. This year I didn't bother even though I was warned that I would almost certainly get Deadly Swine Flu and that I would Die and neither happened. Not even a sniffle.

I know that. But it's still sad when some 20 year old pregnant woman is dead because she's sick with influenza.
I myself have no underlying conditions. But it pisses me off the way they report deaths and always add that 'fact' as an afterthought, as if most of the people reading articles are perfectly healthy. They don't think about those who are sick and how scared that might make them feel. Do you know what I mean?
I don't have TV so I don't see what is on the news. I do read articles from the CDC and WHO and general newspapers reporting deaths. I am studying biology and would like to go into virology eventually so I have been following influenza since the 2005 H5N1 outbreak.
This is different from regular seasonal influenza, because instead of the usual deaths being from the very young and very old, it's hurting people in between. You are right, chances are you will get this flu and survive. But it's still a bit scary, because you never know if you or a loved one are going to be the unlucky statistic who is going to be hooked up to a ventilator choking to death as your lungs disintegrate. It is definitely exploding right now in the northern hemisphere now that school & university is back in session, so it's not over. No need to panic. But one should be informed.
I go to this site a lot, they are very educated and non alarmist.

You can still get it-just a lighter case. Since that was lighter, why take the chance? I never get it either since I started getting the shot-but I still get it.
I think taking small precautions-shot,hand washing, etc can hardly be called mass hysteria. Ignoring warnings, particularly since anyone with diabetes or even pregnant is in a higher risk category now,is asking for trouble. WHO/CDC is concerned-they really do know more about it than we do. I'm going with CDC & WHO.

^^ No I got the full bollox flu after the shot. I couldn't get out of bed for 2 weeks. There are so many different flu viruses out there one shot isn't going to immunise you against all of them.
I am skeptical about the WHO and other taxpayer funded people with a vested interest in justifying their entire existance by issuing dire warnings about "new" things that actually happen all the time. I reckon if there WAS a really deadly disease out there that would kill us by the million we wouldn't hear a word about it to prevent mass public hysteria.
Australia has just been through its annual Flu Season and almost every single case was indeed the Dreaded Swine Flu. Total number of deaths = approx 40 (all had underlying serious health problems) out of a total population of 21 million. Do the math.
I'm not saying you shouldn't take precautions like frequent hand washing or maybe even take Tamiflu (whose makers are laughing all the way to the bank) if you have other medical issues that might make you more vulnerable. Just don't be sucked in by the media that this flu is any worse than all the others.

we had a blurb in our newspaper about a NY campus at Cornell where over 100 students have flu symptoms and at least one case has been confirmed to be severe and the student hospitalized. not a good sign for the start of the school year. as a parent you certainly take these things to heart, having just sent a child off to college.

Is that more or less than a "normal" year?
And if its less did the handwashing, being more aware, etc make a difference?
For the record, I loved my flu shot, I got flu in August one year & never looked back after that. When I had my shot I hardly even got a cold....
