Default Woman has 33-pound tumor removed

BEIJING - Chinese doctors operating on a woman with abdominal pain expected to find an inflamed appendix but discovered a football-sized 33-pound tumor instead, a Beijing daily reported on Thursday.
Surgeons at the capital's Chaoyang Dongba hospital spent 30 minutes removing the tumor from Xiao Wen's abdomen, the Beijing Times said. It measured 16 inches by 12 inches and is believed to have been benign.
"It's just unbelievable, who would have thought a stomach could have such a large tumor?" the 21-year-old's father said.

One surgeon who operated on Xiao Wen said he had not seen such a large abdominal tumor in more than 20 years of medicine.
"If it hadn't been taken out in time, it could have spontaneously burst, threatening her health," the paper quoted him as saying.
Her family had not noticed anything wrong with Xiao Wen's stomach as at 251 pounds, she was already "comparatively fat," the paper said.
Xiao Wen, whose weight ballooned after she developed a lymphatic disorder as a child, said before the operation that she hoped it "could help her lose weight."

Two years ago I was having really abnormal periods..so they did an ultrasound and saw a "mass" So ... after what was suppose to have been a laproscopic surgery..which turned into a C-section.. (imagine waking up and finding that out) anyhow they removed a tumor attached to my ovary..the size of a little pickle.

But I always think.. Man if I hadn't had problems with my period I may have never known and ended up on the Discovery channel one day talking about my Gigantic tumor..

My mom had been experiencing pain for awhile. She finally went in when she could no longer bear it. She ended up having surgery to remove a cantaloupe-sized cyst attached to her ovary. (I could get into more details, but I'll spare everyone.) After surgery she remarked, "Well no wonder why my pants didn't fit anymore!"

I worked for someone who had a massive fibroid tumour - size of a large cantaloupe, easily. It was getting so out of hand, the doctors were telling her that her ability to urinate was on the verge of being compromised and then it would be emergency surgery.

She was 51, no kids and removing this tumour meant a complete hysterectomy. She simply couldn't handle the thought she'd never have kids and that the surgery would remove all chance of that. As if being 51 hadn't already done that...

Crazy as a loon, this one. The tumour was simply one more example of it. I finally quit because I was so sick of her talking about the problems she was experiencing, but wouldn't do anything about it.

A few years ago - I met a friend of a friend who had a fibroid tumor removed that was the size of a TURKEY! She just kept hoping it would be OK and go away. She was a tall, big-boned woman so I guess it was possible for her to hide it.

I was strangely intrigued by this and couldn't stop questioning her about it - as if I were in med school.

Can you imagine?
