Default Overheard in a drugstore...

I was walking around the local drugstore tonight and overheard three women talking about diets:

One woman: "I haven't had chocolate in a few weeks."

Second woman: "Really?? Wow... a few weeks? I haven't had chocolate in... SIX MONTHS."

After the other women made congratulatory noises, she said, "I know, I've been good."

Now, the reason I was walking around the drugstore aimlessly was because I had just bought an ice cream at the nearby ice cream parlor (Baskin Robbins) and didn't want to eat it outside in the cold (it was Truffle Paradise on a sugar cone).

So I automatically started to feel very guilty about myself, and my lack of eating rules and regulations. I also suddenly felt very soft and pudgy and was very curious to see what a woman looks like after SIX MONTHS without chocolate.

Slowly, I rotated my body in her direction and peeked around a rack of potato chips to get a peek, totally ready to be intimidated by a perfect body... what did I see? Well, the good girl was sitting in a chair with metal arm rests and her body was spilling out and overflowing out of the arm rests!

She wasn't extraordinarily fat, but she sure didn't look thin --more like the recent pics of Janet Jackson. And the thing is, I think sometimes people get off on deprivation, and the success of following strict self-imposed rules, that the big picture kinda gets lost. What is the point of abstaining from something as delicious and innocent as chocolate, if at the end of six months, all you can be proud of is that you didn't have any chocolate?? I don't get it...

Or maybe she's lost weight over 30 lbs from not eating chocolate and cutting back on sugar. LOL...This is one of these situations that you just never know.

Giving up one food won't make you lose weight, she could still be eating lots of something else she shouldn't have.

Still my point is who knows what she looked like before..and just because she specifically said chocolate ..maybe she's given up other stuff too. With so little information you just don't know.

Maybe she's diabetic. Maybe she's borderline-diabetic. Maybe she HAS lost weight...you didn't see her six months ago.

Hehe, it's true, she could have come a long way in six months.

But if I had a friend like her who isn't a diabetic, then I'd tell her that she could probably resume with the chocolate* but keep all the other good habits she's been keepin'!

*But of course by chocolate I mean chocolate WITHOUT high fructose corn syrup, partially hydrogenated vegetable oils, or fake sugars.

This is a little OT but my only eating "rule" is that I can have anything I want, as long as it is homemade or made at a non-chain restaurant/bakery/deli. So, that's why it's okay that I just bought and consumed a huge slice of cheesecake from the local italian bakery. But seriously though, it's the pre-packaged stuff with all the chemical ingredients that I fear... They make me feel gross on the inside.
