Default Pilates

Does anyone do Pilates? I'm interested in hearing about your experiences and if you've seen results.

I've been doing Pilates sporadically for over a year. I am really trying to buckle down and do it 3 times a week. I am doing two times at home with the mat (and I just ordered the Winsor Pilates magic circle), and once a week I take either a mat or reformer class at a Pilates studio.

I have read that in 20-30 sessions you will have a "whole new body"...does anyone know how long you have to do Pilates in one session to get those results? I usually do 20 minutes twice a week on my own and then my studio classes are an hour long.

I do pilates, and I love it... I have those Pilates DVDs and do them as regularly as I can... It really works...

Is it true Pilates can make you taller?

I've heard that Pilates and the Alexander Technique can stretch and align you to make you taller, or maybe it's really about proper alignment and good posture that makes you appear taller.

I bought Winsor Pilates and Denise Austin Stretching for one dollar each on Ebay.

^ Yup, exactly right! Your muscles look leaner, your posture is better..so you appear to look taller... Or maybe you even actually do get taller, but that probably takes time...

I think it's improved posture that makes you look 'taller'. Most people slouch but don't realise it. I quick test: stand with you back against the wall and try to make as much contact with the wall as possible and perhaps get someone to mark where the top of your head is. Now do it again but stand in your normal, more relaxed posture and see where your head is. You might be quite shocked/surprised at the difference.

I do a bit of Pilates and the core body strength benefits are fantastic. I have a swiss ball which I sit on at the 'puter and also use it for various exercises and I have noticed a BIG difference in my general wellbeing, although I can't say my body shape has changed dramatically. I used to get various back/shoulder aches and pains which have now ceased and I'm sure, again, it's improved posture and core body strength that's made the difference.
