Saturated fats are fast acting, and worse than you think
Quote:
Do you read product labels? Do you know what you're eating when you order in a restaurant? Just how much of what you do consume in an average day is filled with the kind of material that will clog your arteries? And how long after you eat does the effect begin to show in your body?
Those conscious of their daily intake of saturated fat may be surprised to find out that the bad stuff we put in our bodies starts doing us almost instant harm.
Researchers gave test subjects a milk shake and a piece of carrot cake and then measured how long it took for the saturated fat in both foods to start having an effect on the body.
It's likely even they were surprised by the answer - just three hours later, arteries were already showing signs of stiffening up. And the older we get, the worse the cumulative effect is.
"The study seems to show that ingesting high fats increases inflammation and affects the good cholesterol, which ultimately affects how the blood vessel functions," reveals cardiologist Dr. Beth Abramson of the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Hedy Scambia knows the dangers. "I had two strokes in one month," the 79-year-old admits. And she's also had a heart attack.
Age is one factor. But so is a lifetime of eating the tastiest foods that have the worst effects imaginable.
"I like sausage," she laughs. "I think about it every day."
But Hedy has been forced to change her diet because of her medical condition. "This morning I had bran flakes.Tomorrow maybe I have oatmeal."
The bottom line - you likely won't be able to avoid the bad stuff in your food and we all need some fat in our diet. But getting too much has an effect that can last a lifetime.
So open your eyes before you open your mouth by reading the labels.
Then at least you'll know if what you're eating will one day be eating you.
Here's a look at the saturated fat content in a variety of common foods. These are only estimates. A lot depends on the ingredients included in each and how much you actually eat.
French Fries: (147 gram serving): 7 grams
Butter: (1 tablespoon): 7 grams
Margarine stick: (1 tablespoon): 2 grams
Mayonnaise: (1 tablespoon): 1.5 grams
Potato Chips: (Small bag about 42.5 grams): 2 grams
Whole Milk: (1 cup) 4.5 grams
Skim Milk: (1 cup): 0 grams
One Doughnut: 4.5 grams
Cookies (Cream filled, about three cookies): 1 gram

My arteries are in denial...
I was talking to a guy who works at the parking lot of a mall in front of my aunt's house, and we both agreed that we're gonna die sooner, but happy with our clogged arteries.
