Possible vaccine for Herpes!
I heard on the news that there's a possible vaccine for Herpes but only in women and it'll reduce somewhat the spread of HIV b/c it spreads sometimes through open soars I guess and this is awesome news! But my gyno just told me that Herpes isn't even that big a deal b/c most ppl only have a few outbreaks when they're younger then as their immune system does its job in a person's 30s and 40s they don't have outbreaks...interesting...

Re: Possible vaccine for Herpes!
That's great news. Do you know if it will be good for people that already have the virus? I get "cold sores" on my mouth only, none downstairs, so this could be great for me, let alone people who suffer downstairs I'm past 40 and still get them. They suck!

Something interesting about herpes. There are two main strains HSV1 (typically oral, above the waist) and HSVII (typically below the waist) and they are transferable. If you have oral sex w/ someone with a cold sore on their mouth, they can give you herpes. So someone can have genital herpes with HSVI. So if you or your partner have a cold sore, no oral sex until everything is all healed up. Vice versa too.
Anyway that would be cool if they came out w/ a vaccine. I know they came out with a cervical cancer/HPV one recently.

Re: Possible vaccine for Herpes!
Ok this maybe a dumb question but if you have herpes can you deliver a child vaginally? I had heard that if a woman has the virus she could pass it to her child.
No I dont have herpes and no Im not expecting.

Re: Possible vaccine for Herpes!
Yes, a woman can absolutely have a safe vaginal delivery if she has herpes. Typically her OB will prescribe Valtrex (?) during her last month to prevent an outbreak. If she has an active outbreak, then the baby would be delivered via cesarian. But, the herpes meds *should* prevent an outbreak.

Re: Possible vaccine for Herpes!
^Me too. I agree with you AliceInWonderland. My sister gets bad cold sores and she's had them since she was a kid. She wasn't having sex at 6 or 7 yrs old! She's 33 yrs old now and she still gets them. Her doctor told her cold sores are a form of herpes and they're basically harmless. You can get them in the mouth and in the vaginal area but it's nothing to panic about. I'll take herpes over HIV anyday too. I rather get an outbreak once or twice a year on the mouth or down there and live forever than have AIDS and die a horrible, gruesome death. How about chancre sores? She gets those too sometimes..on the inside of her cheeks and sometimes in her throat. She said her doctor told her it's all related. Nothing dangerous, just more people are susceptible to them than others. They go away.

I've heard that but only in the last few years. It's not really common knowledge and it's to bad it isn't, no one wants to pass it along that way.
I found out that when I eat peanuts I'd get cold sores. No more peanuts for me, I still eat peanut butter but watch how much I use. I get the sores on occasion, probably from stress, I have enough of that! A nurse friend of mine says PMS brings them on also.

Re: Possible vaccine for Herpes!
Here is a question...How can you find out you have herpes, through a blood test right?
I am kind of being SO paranoid right now. For the past three days I have kissed my mom's best friend on the cheek when I see her. She had something under her mouth and her chin. It could be a pimple, but what if it was a cold sore?I heard that Herpes Simplex 1 can be spread through skin-to-skin contact and even through touching ustensils. Also, my best best friend's mom was kissing her 2 month old grand-daughter. So I was thinking she wouldn't be doing that if she knew it is contagious. But then again, some don't care of transmitting it on or even don't know it is contagious.
It is also because if it turns her mom does have herpes and she passed it on to me, I do not want to pass it on to my boyfriend. So I'll go get tested for it.
I also heard that 90% of Americans over 40 are carriers of the herpes virus and they carry and can pass it on and show no symptoms. Also, a lot of us have been exposed to the herpes virus as children and our immune system has fought it. So, my question is, let's say her mom did have a cold sore, could it be possible that I will not catch it?

Really?Where do you get them???Inside your mouth? What you have could be canker sores and not cold sores. Canker sores are NOT contagious.
I get canker sores sometimes under my top lip and it kind of tingles and burns. Also, stress and PMS is known to make them appear sometimes. Same with cold sores though.

Re: Possible vaccine for Herpes!
It's too late for me. I got herpes from my fathers genes or something. I got my first outburst when I was 1-2 years old and my hole inside mouth was covered up with this shit. I could not eat anything for days... My mom has been with my father for over 20 years and she has never ever got it.She might got the virus anyway, though.
Luckily today, I might have it once or twice a year, a little one on my lip or nose and always at the same time on the year.

Canker sores ARE cold sores and they ARE contagious!!!!!!! Same thing.
My son got a cold sore when my dad kissed his hands when he was two weeks old. He was put in the hospital with an IV in his head (newborn, no immunities) All of the skin around his thumb blistered and came off. He was in the hospital for 10 days. My dad STILL feels guilty about it. It's a sad thing that I know so much about Herpes, but I had to so that he wouldn't touch his wanger and spread it 'down there' (btw, Simplex 1 and Simplex 2 IS the same thing....only difference is location. If you have a cold sore/canker sore/herpes outbreak and perform oral sex...guess what!)
Fortunately, the only place he spread it to was his mouth. Since he was so small, and the virus outbreak is always in the same area, the sore has migrated from the tip of his thumb when he was 2 weeks old, to the knuckle closest to his pointer finger now at 13 years old(skin has stretched over the years as he's grown, CRAZY ain't it!!). So there's a little tid bit for ya!

Re: Possible vaccine for Herpes!
You can't test for herpes through blood. You have to have a lesion that a culture is done on.
Herpes is a painful and irritating thing, but like most posters have said, it's not a death sentence and not debilitating.
