Ketosis - Fact or Fiction?
This is the basis of the Atkins/No Carb diet philisophy. I am a carb addict, no question, and for the last week or so I've been cutting out bread, pasta, rice, potatoes altogether and eating protein whenever possible. I feel like shit but the weight is FALLING off so I guess I am doing something right. I test my wee every other day with Ketosticks and it's deffo dark pink, ie, ketosis, ie, good.
Anyone else done this with any success? I am happy to cut out the carbs, and I'm a salad/veggie addict, but sometimes I just can't face another tin of tuna, small steak or chicken breast. And I miss my fruit!!!!

I have been doing it for a week. Right now I am eating a salad with chicken breast and salsa and guacamole for dressing. I am having tomatoes with herbed cream cheese on the side. I feel satisfied.

ketosis is affective but it shouldn't be done longer than a little over two weeks every few monthes. its really bad for your body to stay in it too long.

Ketosis is a process in which your body reprocesses fat to create glycogen
Your liver has a small store of glycogen which can last half a day on a carbohydrate fast.
You muscles and especially your brain need glycogen to function. Oddly enough your brain functions on a simple sugar (glyocgen)
What happens when you don't intake carbs is that your body goes into a state where it starts looking for alternative sources of energy, rating in importance. Your brain is the most important so it looks for glycogen.
it does this by reassimilating fat stores, in order of least importance. This is usually the less desirable fat that you want to lose, but when your body becomes desperate it will take the fat from layers around your lungs, and other organs. This is a dangerous aspect of ketosis.
Of course, your body is designed to be efficient, it's evolved to do so. If cars were as efficient as our body, they could run hundreds off miles on thimbles of fuel.
So your body uses the most efficient processes, but it still has less efficient processes in times of needs. Ketosis is one of them, fat gets broken down into byproducts, one them being glyocgen. This then goes to fuel your body and you essentially do lose weight. The danger is that your body also produces an acid by product, ketones. Too many ketones in your body will acidify your blood and can lead to many health problems, kidney stones, gall stones, gout, liver malfunction and eventual death.
Of course everyone's body will be different, some can cut their carb intake to under 50 grams and experience ketosis (You can get test strips, but you may also notice a sweet..fruity scent to your breath. Your urine will smell different too, noticeably). Some people only experience ketosis when they are intaking no carbs at all.
You can re-alkanize your body by eating alkanizing foods, which are usually vegetables and oddly enough vinegars and citric fruit.
It's not a long term plan.
No google, bitch
Also when you eat carboydrates each carbohydrate you intake you also need 1 gram of water to assimilate it properly. Cutting out carbs will drop excessive water weight.

You can eat plently of vegetables on the Atkin's diet. It is misinformation that it is all meat and cheese. The induction (strict-20 carbs or under) portion of Atkin's is only a week. After that, you add back the carbs in a controlled manner.

I know, I've done it before. But...I like my pasta...eating it right now LOL. And the lo-carb versions of breads, etc don't appeal to me cuz they're full of gluten and chemicals.

In the book they say the cravings go away. WRONG! I want a pizza so bad. And pie. And ice cream!

proof of what? that its affective or that its dangerous to your body?
i lose 7 pounds every time i do it and as long as i keep up eating right and exercising the affects last. when i stop exercising and eat lots of crap, yeah the weight will come back, that goes for any weightloss method though.
i find ketosis to be the easiest for me to stick to because its a stepping stone to eating healthy. i eat lean baked fish and chicken with lots of vegetables and nuts, an egg and a glass of milk while on it. when its over i get to add fruits and keep it at that. its a balanced diet with no sugar. i like it and it works for me.

I'm also finding that alcohol (wine) affects me much more quickly - something to bear in mind........

Most likely because your liver is processing all the ketones in your blood stream. They need to be neutralized before you piss them out, so it's not as actively dealing with alcohol.

I have a friend that has been on and off this diet.
He has lost weight, but he has been getting a lot of comments about how he smells like pot. Yes, marijuana. Some people thought he was toking it up during lunch! You might want to ask friends about how you smell. Seriously!
