Got a flu shot - now I have the flu!

Bugger. My doc told me to have a shot because I get bad asthma with the flu so I agreed. Big mistake..... cough, hack, cough, wheeze, cough, cough

AO I couldn't figure out why there would be a flu shot thread in the spring but I keep forgetting that my spring is your fall.

I hate that, and I have the same reaction to the shot. Hope you feel better soon!

Sorry to hear that, I've had the flu once and I'll never forget how horrible I felt. All I could do was lay in bad, hope you feel better.

When we get a flu shot--we're getting an actual injection of the flu so it builds up our immune system for when it does come around.

Last year I got the flu 2 months AFTER I got the flu shot--apparently we can still get the flu after a shot, but a weaker-version of. After 1 day off work, I was ok.

yeah. this happened to me two years in a row.

i stopped getting the shot about 4 years ago, and havent had flu since. knock wood.

Same here! I'll take my chances now and get some Tamiflu if I get sick rather than getting the shot and getting sick for sure.

Thanks for the sympathy [bask, bask]. The problem with the shot is that it only targets specific versions of the flu virus, so although I may have immunity to #1, #2 and #3 I'll still get hit by #4. Actually, I feel a little better today so perhaps it was just a 48hr mini-flu. I've had the real deal twice in my life (the last time after a shot too) and was unable to get out of bed for 2 weeks so this is no biggie.

yeah. i feel similarly about the flu shot. the damn virus mutates so fast, it's a shot in the dark that what you get vaccinated against is what's actually going around. pfft.

The only time in my life I ever had the flu was after I jumped on the flu-shot bandwagon about 8 years ago. I was almost as sick as when I had pneumonia! Pissed me off cuz I had to take off work and not get paid.

I've not had a shot or the flu since (yes, knock wood).

BTW....the best treatment for when you're feeling under the weather? a nice sifter of Brandy & Benedictine (B&B) or bourbon. Of course.
