Default Harmonic Healing and Meditation

Quote:
Tune out the iPod and listen to another form of sound which can drastically improve your health.

Should the quest for harmonic healing require as much fine-tuning as the AM dial, the Internet offers a wide range of alternatives. Here are some of our at-home alternatives for mind-body treatments to break the stress cycle!

Marilynn Velpel, founder of (Living Sound Studio) in Winnipeg, felt compelled to create personalized music CDs after an intuitive voice suggested that she use her talents to heal others. The retired music teacher produces recordings using a name, a birthdate, a prayer of good intentions and an electric keyboard, then waits for heavenly vibrations to flow through her. In addition to the studio-recorded The Angelic Healing Ray, Velpel says her inspirational CDs have addressed everything from troubled relationships to insomnia.
For those partial to the prone position, Michael Stodola, a Saskatoon therapist, suggests purchasing a full-body vibroacoustic mat (www.somatron.com), a horizontal therapy that involves strategically placing speakers under the body and beside the ears. The mats can also be purchased from Becky Clemments at thesoundhealer.com. Clemments' therapy focuses on the proper use of the mats.

Make a date -- meditate!
Sitting in the classic full lotus position is still the best way to meditate, says Adarsa Chakra, a Zen shiatsu therapist in Toronto. Otherwise, assume the half lotus or the Japanese seisa pos-ition (feet tucked up under the rump). Chakra recommends sitting about a metre away from a blank wall.

Hold your spine erect "as if someone were pulling a thread from the sacrum right up through the crown of your head," he says.

Rest your hands palms up on your belly (just below the navel), placing one on top of the other, with the middle joints of your middle fingers crossing and the tips of your thumbs touching. Keep your arms relaxed at your sides.

With your eyes two-thirds closed, softly gaze at a spot on the wall and start inhaling and exhaling through your nose. Follow your breath coming in and going out for several minutes. You should feel all outward thoughts start to move away as you relax down into your body.

As your breaths get longer and thinner, you can add a sound on the exhale (like "ohm"). Practitioners of kundalini yoga chant the sound "sat" and end each breath with "nam." They believe that making the vibrational "aaaa" sound in "sat" liberates and cleanses the body while "nam" acts as a mental anchor to clear a cluttered mind. Conclude the meditation by taking a few deep breaths (www.kundaliniyoga.org).

Benefits
"When you meditate, you are unifying the energy flow within your body by opening up the governing vessel, which runs up the back of your spine, and the conception vessel, which runs down the front of your spine," says Chakra. "When you open these vessels with meditation, you neutralize the tension in your body and start to relax."

I wouldn't recommend the seiza position though...it's bad for your knees and cuts off blood circulation if you stay that way for a long time.
