I love Balzac. Simply love him. Cousin Bette and Le père Goriot was great. Old Goriot just breaks my heart.

i love balzac. and stendhal too, i was one of the few people in class that didn't detest 'le rouge et le noir'. but my fave 'old' french book is 'les liaisons dangeureuses'. it's smart, sexy, funny, witty, devious... just perfect.
the other really classic ones i loved reading in school were rabelais and nerval. and of course all the 'poètes maudits'.

Okay, who suggested we read The Ulysses??? Come here, so thatI can kick you!
I think that was me..but it was more like a joke. Not only would it be near impossible to read(I did try before) ..but can you imagine DISCUSSING IT?

I think PB suggested Bovary..
