^^^ Yes!

And I read somewhere that the aging Queen Victoria ignored calls for her to step aside so that her aging son, Edward VII, could ascend. Apparently she did not believe he was fit to be king (he was a drunken womaniser). So she stayed on as long as she could - by the time she died and he took the throne, Edward was not just old but also quite diseased. He hung on but for 7 or so years before his son, George V (grandfather of current queen) took the throne and steered England through WW1.

Conspiracy nerd in me is secretly harboring the hope that QE2 is just as clever and hoping to keep Charles' reign brief for her grandson, William III to take over and rule a long time.

The reason? She's never forgiven Charles for dragging the royal family thru shite and demeaning the Church of England.

Um...forgive my ignorance, but aren't these people (kings and queens) merely figureheads, they make no decisions about important stuff? Tony Blair runs the show, right?

If I am wrong...then why is someone qualified to run a country because of their lineage? Seems utterly stupid to me. Just like the Bush administration I hate the whole idea of monarchy, and I don't understand the obsession with so called "royals". They are all inbred anyway, since they can't marry anyone outside of their "class".

Aries, you're preaching to the choir. No one here takes the monarchy seriously. We just like to talk smack about them for the same reasons you note.

BTW...most royals have been marrying 'outside their class' for quite awhile. That's why we have Diana/Charles/Camilla to play with, among others.

Ugh I soooo don't care, I wish they'd just get rid of the monarchy and be done with it. Not that i mean that I wish harm on the royal family, they can keep their money and houses and all that stuff, but just be stripped of being Queens and Kings and Princes and Princesses and all sorts
