I also doubt that he's "that" rich. Richer than me, maybe richer than you, but whats the betting that most of that rcord company advance went on drugs, and there was a reason that he was evicted from his last place, it was for non-payment of rent.....
I also do not think that he is that talented. Burroughs novels are still read, I know I've heard babyshambles, but I can't remember it.... (It's not like he's the new Presley/Lennon & MacCartney/Jonny Lydon/etc.)

I guess my point was that although Garland and Burroughs and countless others died with less than stellar bank accounts, they became or already were icons. Doherty sells out shows (maybe people hoping to see him kick it live on stage) and has quite a fan base, with quite a few people allegedly hoping he'll go back to being the poet he was once revered for being. People choose strange idols, no doubt, but I can't say he bugs me much.

same here. i don't think he's anywhere near burroughs and thompson, talent-wise, but he doesn't bother me either. as for idols, i agree, people choose strange idols, and sometimes dumb ones. and if people decide to do something stupid because their stupid idol did it, i'm sorry but i don't have any sympathy and you can't blame the celeb because if it hadn't been that particular celeb being emulated, it would have been another. the problem is people being stupid and easily influenced. i don't buy into that whole celebs having an obligation to be positive role models thing.

I don't think they have an obligation to be positive role models, either, but what I was stating was that his actions do affect a lot of people and not just a luckless few.

Fair enough. Has anyone read his poetry? I might give it a look if it's online--it would be intersting to see what all the hype was about.
