^^Yes, you are right Novice. The very first time i ever heard of Pete Doperty was about maybe 3 or so years ago, i was reading a music magazine (Spin or Blender) and there was an article about this *hot edgy raw new English band, The Libertines*; it was (obviously) from when they were new on the scene & weren't famous yet & was pre-Kate Moss....And it talked about how he (or "they"--i could have sworn it said other members of the band too) was a former male prostitute. So even my very first impression of Pete Doperty, from years ago has been a big giant:

i don't know why the tabs are so fascinated by him and why everyone has such strong reactions to him. so he's a junkie and he doesn't hide it? he's not the first one. and he'll probably be a druggie all his life and never get clean, he has enough cash to feed his habit. i'm not saying he should be voted best youth role model or anything but he's not really harming anyone but himself (and maybe those closest to him but that's their business). i reserve the scum of the earth titles to, say, the assholes that run jesus camps to 'cure' gays, the taliban, bush...

^^Ditto. William S. Burroughs was a junkie for 50+ years, a rotten dad and 'accidently' killed his wife but I still consider him a fab writer and thinker. Other famous junkie/parents/icons: Hunter S. Thompson, Keith Richards, Judy Garland....the list is endless.

No way is Doherty is in a class with Bush, Cheney, or fundies who want to cure "gays", but I still find this clown reprehensible. If he wants to throw his life away being a junkie, that's fine by me, but he does affect innocent people by his actions. Wasn't there a picture of him shooting up a girl who already looked to be pretty much out of it? And if I recall correctly, Doherty has been known to get behind the wheel of a car when doing drugs, so he is affecting other drivers and pedestrians.

I was horrifed by the pictures of Doherty carrying Kate's daughter, Lila. Kate is old enough to choose her friends, but Lila is not. How can having this disgusting druggie in her life be positive for this little girl? Somehow I doubt Doherty has the sense to abstain from his drug use when he is around this little girl.

Doherty doesn't hide his drug use, he glorifies in it and brags about it. He's not some sensitive artiste writing poetry and shooting up in a hovel. He seems to want the whole world to know about his drug use and to approve of it and pat him on the back. I shudder to think of kids my nephew's age(13) reading articles about this clown and thinking of him as a cool, Byronesque junkie. Actually, my nephew is too smart to fall for Doherty's shtick, but there are probably are plenty of kids who AREN'T that smart.

Doherty's not Hitler, but he's still pretty bad.

I agree with Edie and I wouldn't bank on him having truckloads of money forever. A lot of extremely rich people with drug dependencies end up shooting it all up their arm so to speak.
