I'm not sure its well known tbh. I only knew about it because one of my friends went to Prince Charles's school (I forget the name of it). Our Oxbridge universities also have % from less fortunate backgrounds, however, that isn't to say that they are accepted by the student body.
I think that the boarding school thing is left over from the "colony days".
Unfortunately some of the male populace thinks it's "funny" to take on army lads home on leave & out for a beer with their mates. They don't seem to understand that some of the freedoms they have is due to the people that are in that army. A lot of the elite would have made a damn sight more outside the army, but believe in what they are doing (we have a welfare system that seems to support the "we don't want to work" people; which despite my socialist upbringing I find difficult to swallow!)
And I'm a bit hazy on your last statement....
Oprah: My School is Safe, Not Strict

Oprah Winfrey is denying allegations that her new school in South Africa, Oprah Winfrey's Leadership Academy for Girls, is too strict with its students.
A statement from The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy Foundation says, "Our goal is to protect the health, welfare and well-being of the students at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy. As with other boarding schools, we provide a structured, safe and nurturing environment in which the girls can learn and develop."
News24 in South Africa reported yesterday that cell phones and email are not allowed during the week, parental visits need to be approved by the school at least two weeks in advance, and the maximum number of visitors per pupil is four.
Parents are not allowed to bring junk food items for their children, News24 said, but the Foundation told us that food items are discouraged but not prohibited. The Foundation went on to say that the students are allowed to have treats and that family members are encouraged to bring books, journals or educational materials to their girls when they visit.
News24 also reported that a satellite meeting between Oprah and the parents was abruptly canceled last week. The Foundation says no teleconference or in-person meeting with the parents and guardians was scheduled for last week.

Keys to the castle, if you will. I find that you can governments and thus society regard payment for privellige (ie boarding schools, etc) to be paid for in $$ to be around other privelliged persons, or by blood, putting your life down for your country, and seeing how the dice roll for you.
And BTW I went to HrH's Australian equiv school, Geelong Grammar (Timbertop too)
I think its Eaton you were wondering about, but I couldnt be sure

Yes, I get you. Unfortunately now, blood has lost a lot of it's value!
Nah, Chalie went to somewhere in Scotland. My friend is the least sporty person I know & told me horror tales of cross country runs....Gordonstoun.. that's it. (which is understandable as his dad was RAF)
Hee hee! I went to a comprehensive! What fun we had.....

Charlie spent his (Oz equiv) year nine at Geelong Grammar - Timbertop.
Gordenston, you are right, but where do you think he learnt to do his cross country running.
15 years old and a cross country marathon the day before the end. I have some brilliant stories about this prat. He called his Mummy to have him taken home 8 months in - his personal toilet is still in the storage shed collecting possum shit.

Please do start your own thread for them!!! Obviously we have nothing but respect (& sometimes not even that) for him..... Is there a crest on the potty? (I'm really sorry that I'm not interested enough in him to realise that he's spent time in your lovely county!)

The thing I find humorous about Oprah's alleged strictness, is that she has to be one of the the most self-indulgent, pampered persons on this planet. No macaroni and mashed potatoes for her students (Oprah's fave comfort food)!
I do think she's providing these girls with a wonderful opportunity though. If I'm not mistaken, she's offered to pay for each one's college tuition upon graduation. I guess I could suck it up for that.

I'm sorry but why can't they have a wonderful education AND mashed potatoes for dinner? It's hardly a lot to ask for.

Everyone knows that mashed potatoes come with free education FYI.
Pic, there have been "funds" set up since time immimorial generally counter productive to the point that they were originally set up for. Sometimes a tax dodge, sometime nepotism, or friends of the family funds. I have seen this shit involve people Im sure you have heard of as well, but if people dont know about it , whos going to blow the whistle......
Fuck em

If they were given mashed potatoes and mac and cheese, she would be chastised for making them unhealthy and fat. Nothing she will ever do is good enough. I'm not her die-hard fan, but it's a nice thing she's trying to do.

I was trying to be tongue in cheek about the mac and mashed potatoes. I was just surprised that someone who lives a life of luxury would head such a strict, austere insitution. It is odd that they have a spartan diet, yet sleep on Pratesi sheets. Oliver at the Ritz-Carlton. Two extremes imo.
I don't know what Oprah's motives are. But I do know these girls would not have the opportunity for an education if not for her school.

They have to keep things super strict to keep those girls under control. They don't want them getting out or having just any type of visits b/c they could end up pregnant or all drugged out which would really screw up this wonderful opportunity they've been given.
Wonder how Oprah would handle living on a diet of fruit and yogurt? Hmmm......
