She should build all the schools she can, but why spout off about the American students? She doesn't need to justify why she built a school.

I agree it was good of her to build a school, but she didn't win any friends in the black communities by saying what she did. I don't think she really cares about them though since she has all the middle aged white women on her side. (not me) She should have built the school and stopped talking right there.

Pretty much everything in Canada is taken over and owned by American companies although it started out here...e.g. Eatons (RIP), The Bay, MAC etc...there's more.
So it's like the Canadians are consuming for America

We still buy far less per capita than Americans, but it's still too much.

What a shame that what celebs do is never "enough" for anybody. People in need are people in need period.
To me, it's okay if she wants to spend HER money, where SHE sees fit. BTW - She also contributes to charities in the US, so it's not like she's not spreading the wealth here too. Just obviously not enough.
Maybe next time she should take a poll to see where everyone in the US thinks she should contribute to? Cause I sure would give a flying fuck what anyone else thought about where my hard earned money went.

I don't think the issue is really about where she has contributed her money. IMO, it's about the reason she gave. It kind of rubbed salt in the wound.

No, but seriously. School just stopped having meaning for me. I mean, I've been getting straight A's since 6th grade and got into one of the best highschools in the state but school doesn't mean anything to me. I go in, I do my work, I never actually learn (just memorize for the tests), get my grades, and then go out and party or something. I just don't have the liking for school. The only thing I like about school is that I can hang out with my friends. I only "learn" and get good grades because my parents expect it. I really couldn't care less.
But for me, school never meant anything. And I think a part of it is because my parents pushed it on me so much. It was always "get straight A's" and so I did. But I have no liking for school. Nothing will ever make me like school, no matter how much Oprah donates to my school. For me, when people say "Oh, you don't appreciate school", there's nothing I can do but agree with them. I don't appreciate it. I'd rather be working.

You are too smart for school. Seriously. I think you will go far in life.
As for Oprah, I can't figure this beyotch out: Does she really want to help others, or is she doing all this altruistic crap for her own personal gain?

I think many are just fed up with celebutards that go around patting themselves on the back and thinking they are better than everyone else because they go around throwing their money at pet charity causes. Another thread brought up the parable of the poor widow that gave everything she had while the rich man gave more but only fraction of his net worth and at no real loss to him. I mean, this is the same woman that gave her studio audience a thousand bucks so they can give that money to someone else. Ya right. So I think people are fed up with that bull.
But in some ways I understand oprah's sentiments, a lot of public schools are a joke, the system and some of the teachers in them. But at the same time when are kids and their parents going to start taking responsibility for making sure that they do good in school? All I see are excuses after excuses, take the easy cop out by blaming the teachers and the schools. Why don't these kids and parents take the initiative and start taking school seriously? You know something is out of whack in our society when kids and their parents skip school so that they can wait in line overnight to buy a two hundred dollar pair of sneaker or video game system.

I was thinking about this last night (yes, I have no life), and I think what also irks me about this is that she still hand picked 150 girls out of 3500 to go to this school. She's saying that those in the inner cities don't value education at all - so you couldn't find 150 girls out of 3500 in the inner city that value education? I find that very hard to believe.

We can't claim to be the greatest consumers in the world, although we do try desperately to keep pace with America. Our fragile sense of national identity demands it!

Oprah Loves Rich White People
It seems Oprah still has a soft spot for white kids. While her new South African school for girls grabbed headlines, Oprah has also been lending a helping hand to some ultra-white establishments. According to FOX News, Winfrey gave $1 million to Miss Porter's, an exclusive finishing school in Connecticut, where she sent her nieces. Annual tuition is $38,000, and graduates include Jackie Kennedy, the Vanderbilts and the Rockefellers. The talk show queen has also contributed to Chicago's Lake Shore Academy, whose student body is pretty much entirely white.

To me, it doesn't matter if she IS doing it for her own personal gain...the point is that she is doing it at all. Who cares about the reasons why, she's helping people.

The problem with this is do those schools really need Oprah's extra assistance? The annual tuition for Miss Porter's is about the equivalent of my college loans for four years! I'm almost positive these schools aren't strapped for cash. And, I'll go out on a limb and say that I'm pretty sure that many of the students who attend are materialistic as hell.
