No, of course not, your mother's kids aren't 'bastards'. They were born in marriage, a marriage she later chose to annul. If the Church annuled it, it was upon her request...and even if you want to say the spiritual marriage didn't 'exist' because of the annulment, your mother's kids (you guys) still would NOT be considered 'bastards', because your parents were still married by law anyway.

Perhaps because he was once a devout Catholic so he might be thinking it's easier to astray Catholics and convert them to Scientology.

The whole annulment thingy, i don't think the marriage was based on fraud since Nicole herself converted to Scientology and even though she never was committed she was a member of that "church" for 10 years! She had brains and Tom didn't tie her up and forced her into anything, she should take the responsibility of her mistakes and recognize had she never listen to him and convert to Scientology, he would've NEVER marry her in the first place.

If Catholics are "seen as the most devout" then I think it might be because of the widely-recognized symbolism & rituals. Who I'd really like to see Tom try to convert is a fire-&-brimstone fundamentalist, ooh, like a girl from one of those snake-dancing churches.

The annulment thing is a crucial issue for me, and one that has separated me from Catholicism. Prettygirl made a lot of great points.

I'll just say I've always been told that 1) my marriage to a Protestant was not recognized by the church but 2) I couldn't take communion while married to said Protestant because I was married to the Protestant and 3) while the marriage was not recognized, I would have to get it annulled before marrying someone else or I would be committing adultery.

It just seemed to work against me, whichever way I looked at it.

My stepmom got her first marriage annulled by the Vatican so she could marry my dad in the church. Um, did HE get his first annulled? Hmmm, I've never heard that discussed. I'll have to look into it...

It's crazy all the misconceptions there are about Catholicism. I remember once a man asked me what type of 'animals' the Church used at mass. I was like 'Animals? We don't use animals at mass". Then he said "Well, don't you guys drink blood? I know you Catholics drink blood at the altar. I thought it was animal blood". I was like 'You have got to be kidding me...". Yes, at mass when the Eucharist is given (Holy Communion), it's considered to be the Body and Blood of Christ, but it's not REAL blood from a mammal. It's wine. I thought that was hilarious.

Or our local priest tells us that people come up to him all the time and ask him to say prayers for them, so he'll pray over them or give them a blessing and so often people will interrupt him and say "No, do it in latin so it'll work." My priest says it baffles him how much Hollywood has really given the world this image of the Church as a handful of Exorcism-practicing priests who cast out demons in latin. He said "I hate to disappoint people when I tell them, uh, I don't know Latin..I took one semester of Latin in college and that's it. I don't know any Latin, except for some memorized words from a textbook!". He says people have looked at him like WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU DON'T KNOW LATIN?! YOU'RE A PRIEST! haha!

To each their own. I respect all religions. There are good and bad people in all of them. I really don't know about Scientology, so I can't really form any opinion about it. Do they believe in Christ? Are they considered Christians?

I think they try to project an image of being tolerant of all religions, including Christianity, but later it turns out that it just ain't so. I'm no expert on Scientology (ha!), but I think they consider belief in God to be a delusion.

There's a Catholic church near here that still holds Latin Mass and it's PACKED for all the services on Sundays. People come from all over the city (and state). I know the Church doesn't really 'approve' but there's not much they can do about it and I'm sure they choose to turn a blind eye because it's probably the busiest Catholic church in the whole state. It's a really old fashioned church with lots of gruesome statues of saints being martyred in horribly realistic ways.

The "animal blood" thing is just ignorance - and don't forget it's not just Catholics who celebrate the Eucharist with bread and wine. The Proddy's have Holy Communion too. I was always taught that one of the main differences between the Catholics and Protestants was the issue of Transsubstiation, ie, Catholics believe that the bread and wine actually 'become' the body and blood of Christ in some mystical fashion, whereas Protestants view it as a purely symbolic gesture.

There is one church here in my county that celebrates the mass in Latin. I used to go there as a teenager. I sort of wish they would revert back to it--I think it would make it more universal, but know it's highly unlikely. I like it, but then again, I speak Spanish so it wasn't 'that' difficult for me to understand it. But others would probably be lost, so I can understand the Church dropping it. If people can't understand the mass, what's the point of having it?

A*O, you're right that is a BIG difference between Catholics and Protestants--the Transsubstiation. Catholics do believe the bread and wine actually become the body and blood of Christ and Protestants don't. I remember us having a big discussion about that in Catechism a few months back.

I rarely go to church but when I do I confess I'm a 'bells and smells' kinda person. I love the ritual, the formality and the solemnity of the old fashioned rites. I get really uncomfortable with the 'happy clappy' stuff and if I see a guitar I'm outta there!

Exactly myself. I don't like all that dippy singing & hugging & hand-shaking etc. I love how anonymous the Catholic Church is. Run in & do your thing, run out, and everybody leaves you alone. I love the art (but not gory stuff, geez, never seen any of that), the exact sequence of events, everything you said. It's almost like meditation, and it's very personal. Too bad I can't follow the rules.
