In my experience, people don't say bigoted things when they're drunk unless they think them while they're sober, too. The booze just lessens the inhibitions. I've been on my ass drunk more than once and I've NEVER uttered a racial or sexist slur.
Methinks he's got a lot of 'splaining to do. Of course, as long as his films keep making money, the studios will suck it up.

Serves you right, they needed to cook your agnostic goose!!
That is a HUGE some of money, Oh My!! They DON'T mess around in Cananda, was this your first? What would a subsequent offence be?
Well, it sounds as though it is true. Too bad, I hate to believe the absolute worst in someone, but this is the absolute worst. What a fucker. He needs to donate a staggering amount of money to the JDL or something. I would have thought that no one would even make it in HW being anti-semitic. He will probably get black listed/balled now and it serves him right.

I agree with the first part but I do think there will be some serious repurcusions (sp?) professionally for him, there NEEDS to be.

He'll probably make a big public donation to cover his ass, but if he makes money for the studios, he will continue to make movies regardless of his beliefs. That's the way the town works. They may hold their noses, but they'll do business with him and cash the cheques.

I agree, I don't care how much he apologizes, he meant it. I would never and have never in a million years been bigoted when I'm drunk. He has a problem and needs help for it, but at 50 if he's still an anti-semite he ain't gonna change. I used to think he was funny. I wonder how all the jews in Hollywood who have worked with him over the years feel tonight. What an ass.

Looks like Mad Max has gone "Cruise" on us. Well he's washed up now. Why couldn't he be a polite drunk, like Hasselhoff. My respect for Dave has just shot up the scale, let me tell you.

I read that apology of his and think it's genuine. Alcoholism is a disease and many alcoholics relapse. Such a shame because he's a great actor..and people say lots of stupid shit when they're drunk. I don't think it's a true mirror of his personality, just of his illness. The guilt and shame that follows alcoholics after they do/say these things is horrible. I'm sure he feels like shit.

Very, very, true. Add me to the list of folks who has never made bigoted or racist remarks when drunk. Unfortunately, alcohol is like truth serum, and Mel Gibson's drunken rampage has revealed some aspects of his personality that I'm sure he'd just as soon keep hidden. I wish the asshole would get blackballed within an inch of his life and never get a job in Hollywood again.

I agree, PG - it's actually quite sad to see his decline - I remember when he was young and first starting out. He was/is a very good actor but it was clear that he had some 'personal issues' early on. Politics aside, Mel is a human being and obviously suffers from alcoholism, a disease for which there really is no cure. When I think of diseases (bi-polar, Turette's, mental) that enable/cause people to say or do shit we otherwise would not tolerate in a normal or healthy person, I group alcoholism and drug addiction in the same, and will extend the sympathy or benefit of the doubt as long as they're getting help. I don't know about the 'truth serum' effect, but I've had a couple of dear friends who would say or do absolutely nutty and even mean things - one was an alcoholic, the other bi-polar - we're not talking about evil people, either. But they were very sick. Thankfully, there were interventions or arrests that prompted them to finally get help. If Mel truly is sorry for his actions, he will take action and go into rehab or get intensive treatment to help him manage or cope. It'll always be a daily battle, though.

I've known plenty of alcoholics and mentally ill folks, too, but somehow Mel Gibson doesn't spark my sympathy. I think he probably really is a bigot, and the alcohol didn't just randomly cause him to say mean things. I know that he belongs to a sect of the Catholic church that is so conservative that it does not recognize the changes that were made in liturgy and dogma in 1965. If he gets help, fine, but I don't think joining AA is going to cause him to renounce his racist beliefs.

He's such an unbelievable piece of sh*t. I do feel bad for people struggling with alcoholism, but I sure as hell don't feel bad for bigoted shmucks like him. The comments he made were absolutely disgusting, but I'm actually glad that his true colors are finally showing...there's been so much speculation about whether or not he's an anti-semite, and now he's proved it to all the non-believers out there. Thanks for clearing things up, Mel! Now all of our dislike for you is completely validated
