My old roommate got into Scientology for awhile. She started dating this guy who was one and so she got into it, too. They stopped dating very quickly, but she did it for about a year. In that time, she spent about $30,000. Also, previously she had "emotional" type problems, and I think that doing the Scientology thing made matters A LOT worse. She got all paranoid, wouldn't talk to ANYONE, not her friends, not her family, started ranting and raving about plots and conspiracies, etc. to the point where a psychiatric nurse and police attended the house. She stopped doing the Scientology thing, and seemed to get better pretty quickly. However, she had to change her phone number, because they kept calling her, and they seriously sent her about five pieces of mail every day, and more after she quit going. I've seen some of the pamphlets about doing "rundowns", which seem to range in cost from $10,000 - $50,000. Crazy! They also kept sending her a bill for another $25,000. Who knows what that was for. She eventually quit her job, and moved away with no forwarding address. I wouldn't go near that crazy shit with a ten foot pole!

I think most sensible people already know. Unfortunately the Scientologists will sue the ass off anyone who tries to expose them for what they are. They fought a long (and unfortunately successful) legal battle in the UK to be recognised as a 'church' which automatically confers the status of 'charity' with all the attendant tax breaks, public information disclosure exemptions and confidentiality clauses.
Apart from their sinister methods, financial extortion and general creepyness I am more baffled that ANYONE would seriously believe all the alien shit. I know other religions appear to have 'weird' beliefs if you don't share them, but they at least have some shred of credibility. Also, other religions seem to focus on achieving The Greater Good whereas Scientology appears to be more concerned about filling it's Swiss bank accounts. And who actually gets to SPEND all this $$$ ? It's no use to L.Ron any more.

Traumatized spirits of aliens? Yeah, I guess that would be a good description for Tom.

He's up in his little spaceship cruising the galaxy, spending loads at all the resorts on Mars and Jupiter.

this must be the high point in stupidity: you pay to get brainwashed.

In Germany its classified as a cult, and is not entitled to any of the rights of recognized religions.
It's categorized as "a commercial enterprise"

That's why it was said during the trial of Scooter Libby that he (Libby) had a meeting with Tom Cruise who wanted the US gov to influence the German gov on this issue

Scientology is proof that gullibility and too much money are a bad combination.

Amen, I was thinking the same thing when I read the thread title. She is just doing this to make her man happy.
