I think that sucks. No offence, but the sheer arrogance of living in a country for years on end without learning at least a little of it's language... that sucks.
That said, I know several Americans and Brits living here in Sweden who find it hard to get a proper grasp of the language, because most people here are delighted to get a chance to practice their English with a native speaker - but I'm very sure that that doesn't apply in France!

In his defence, he probably just speaks enough French to get by in the country, but not fluent enough to engage in small talk (and his kids were too young to speak in full sentences and weren't aware their dad didn't understand them that much), hehe..

He's obviously not too talented in the language department, I remember that he couldn't even stumble a few words when he received an award at a french movie ceremony a few years ago so he recorded a few words of thanks beforehand and played the tape on stage - Even his kid quote upthread is wrong (she would have said "c'est bien" not "c'est bon")

I think it's appalling that he's lived there for years, has a French partner and half French children and doesn't know the language. It shows sheer arrogance, laziness and I'd go as far to say stupidity, there's no way in hell I'd have my children talking about me in a language I didn't understand. It's one thing not having an ear for languages, and not being able to master the accent but it isn't even hard to learn to speak passable French. The average 14 year old at my high school spoke better French than Johnny. I'd be embarrassed to even say what he said, he obviously is oblivious to how stupid it makes him look.

Oh yeah lol!!!! Here is an example:
Quote:
|
Here is the translation:
A mosquito
Is an angry mosquito
A mosquito
Stings and stings and sting flesh
A mosquito
Lays it's eggs in our rivers
A mosquito
Lives among its brothers...a mosquito
A mosquito
Very deep lyrics as you can see

To be fair she was about 14 years old when she sang that - The songs written by Gainsbourg are quite different
