When my oldest daughter said she wasn't going to marry her now husband, I asked her why. She gave the same answer everyone does, "A piece of paper isn't going to make me love him more". I told her it isn't just "a piece of paper". It is a ceremony in which you tell all your friends and family, that this is the most important person in the world to me. You are having them witness your love and devotion to each other. The piece of paper is uniportant to that part. You are swearing in front of a minister, judge, (or in my daughters case, her fiancee's younger sister), that you will be loyal to each other and treat each other with love. Or whatever you write in your vows. That is the important part.
