In skimming through this post, I saw that gout is often times associated with heavy drinking. Yep, that was my dad. He drank a lot....I think this caused his gout. He binged and didn't take his medicine as he should. He was on the wagon and fell of the wagon for years. As a result he ended up with gout and pancreatitis. My dad was a good guy, he wasn't a mean or violent drinker, but he could never shake that monkey off his back. He basically ruined his health with that alcohol. We worried about him for years till he died prematurely because of increased health problems due to his alcohol abuse. Gout was a result of that.

I saw gallstones on this post....I had gallstones and had my gallbladder removed in 2000. It runs on both sides of my family...both my grandmothers had it, as did most of my aunts and a lot of my female cousins. My doctor told me it's very common among hispanic and black women of child bearing age to get gallstones and it can be hereditary. He said it could be a result of a fatty diet as most women who get it tend to be overweight, but it's not always the golden rule. I wasn't overweight, so I think I just inherited my gallstones...lol

I'm just waiting for my apendix to go out on me one day...my mom and both my grandmothers had their appendix removed. I'm due for that in my golden years I guess...lol It's okay...as long as I don't get cancer or some dreaded disease, I'll take gallstones or appendix removal any day of the week. I'm not really worried about it. As long as no major organs fail me, I'm cool.

The trigger for attacks is usually something you've eaten or drank and unfortunately it's trial and error working out what it was. For some reason strawberries, tomatoes, seafood are quite common but it could be almost anything. Attacks usually start with a slight stiffness in the ankle or big toe joint, then it feels like a bruise is developing and then the joint swells up and becomes EXTREMELY tender and painful. There are special anti-inflammatory meds you can take plus some hefty painkillers but it's better to spot the early warning signs and deal with it then. Gout is a bit of a 'joke' ailment but the pain is no joke at all - on one occasion MrAO (not a sook by any means) was weeping with pain.

Yep. Days before I had my first attack my big toe joint had that feeling like I needed to pop it really bad, the way people pop or crack their knuckles. A few days went by and it still was a little sore and stiff. Then one morning I woke up, just barely bumped my sore foot against the bed railing and OMG!. Instant tears. Then I was freaking out b/c I was wondering why the hell my foot hurt so bad that I couldn't even touch it. The only good thing about it was that since I was out of comission for almost a week I didn't have to go to work

What i don't understand is why they always go to the archives. So much easier to spot them that way.

It was called the "rich man's disease" centuries ago. I'd wager that it has more to do with eating too much and obesity, toward which alcohol can contribute. Fat man's disease, if you will.

I started to get a faint pain in that big toe joint lately, so I looked this up on Wiki. It seemed kind of inconclusive but it happened the most often in obese people and in old people who weren't necessarily obese.
